Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar quais caracteres qualitativos poderão ser usados na seleção direta e indireta de genótipos de Urochloa brizantha, quanto ao teor de proteína bruta. Foram avaliados nove genótipos, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com duas repetições. Os caracteres qualitativos avaliados foram: volume de gás acumulado nas frações rápida e lenta, proteína bruta, fibras em detergentes neutro e ácido, celulose, lignina, sílica e digestibilidade in vitro da matéria orgânica. A digestibilidade in vitro da matéria orgânica é indicada tanto para a seleção direta quanto indireta de genótipos de U. brizantha com maior teor de proteína bruta.Termos para indexação: análise de trilha, associação entre caracteres, melhoramento genético, teor de proteína bruta. Nine genotypes were evaluated in a randomized complete block design, with two replicates. The following qualitative traits were studied: volume of packed gas in fast and slow fractions, crude protein, acid and neutral detergent fibers, cellulose, lignin, silica, and in vitro digestibility of organic matter. The in vitro digestibility of organic matter is indicated for both direct and indirect selections of U. brizantha genotypes with higher crude protein content.

Resumo: O conhecimento da associação entre os caracteres que compõem a produtividade é importante para a seleção de plantas superiores, principalmente para garantir que o ganho genético ocorra para os diversos caracteres favoráveis. No pinhão-manso, a produtividade de grãos é o principal alvo do programa de melhoramento, porém existem outros caracteres importantes que impactam na produção. Diante desse contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar, por meio de análise de trilha, os efeitos diretos e indiretos de caracteres vegetativos sobre a produtividade de grãos de pinhão-manso. Aos 18 meses após o plantio, foram mensurados os caracteres altura de plantas, diâmetro do caule, número de ramos por planta, projeção da copa na linha, projeção da copa na entrelinha e produtividade de grãos. Foram estimadas as correlações fenotípicas entre os caracteres avaliados, sendo essas correlações desdobradas, por meio da análise de trilha, em efeitos diretos e indiretos, considerando-se o caráter produtividade de grãos como a variável dependente principal. Observou-se que 76% da variação em produtividade foi explicada pelas variáveis explicativas, valor este superior ao observado em outros estudos e adequado para explorar os ganhos com a seleção direta e indireta em pinhão-manso. Os caracteres diâmetro do caule, massa de cem sementes e projeção da copa na entrelinha influenciam diretamente a produtividade de grãos, sendo indicados para seleção direta, assim como para a seleção indireta de progênies superiores de pinhão-manso para produtividade de grãos.Palavras-chave: análise de trilha, correlações, efeitos diretos e indiretos, Jatropha curcas. AbstRAct:The knowledge of the association between traits of production is important for selecting superior plants and mainly to ensure that the genetic gain occurs for many favorable traits. In physic nut, grain yield is the main goal of the breeding program, but there are other important traits that have an impact on production.On such background, the aim of this study was to estimate, using path analysis, direct and indirect effects of vegetative traits on the grain yield of physic nut. At 18 months after planting, the traits plant height, stem diameter, number of branches per plant, plant canopy projection on the line, plant canopy projection between rows and grain yield were measured. Phenotypic correlations among traits were estimated and unfolded in direct and indirect effects through path analysis, considering the grain yield as the main dependent variable. It was observed that 76% of the variation in yield was explained by the explanatory variables; this value is higher than those observed in other studies and appropriate to explore the gains from direct and indirect selection on physic nut. Stem diameter, weight of 100 seeds and canopy projection between rows directly influence the grain yield, being suitable for direct as well as indirect selection of physic nut superior progenies for grain yield.

Direct effects on scenarios and types of path analyses in corn hybrids

ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to estimate the direct effects of explanatory variables on the grain yield of corn in the combinations formed by three types of hybrids x two harvests x nine scenarios of explanatory variables x two types of path analyses. Eleven explanatory variables were measured in 361, 373, and 416 single-, triple-, and double-cross hybrid plants from the 2008/2009 harvest, respectively, and in 1777, 1693, and 1720 single-, triple-, and doublecross hybrid plants from the 2009/2010 harvest, respectively: plant height at harvest (PH), ear insertion height (EIH), ear weight (EW), number of grain rows per ear (NR), ear length (EL), ear diameter (ED), cob weight (CW), cob diameter (CD), 100-grain mass (HGM), number of grains per ear (NGE), grain length (GL) and, the main variable, grain yield (YIELD). Before conducting the traditional and ridge path analyses, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 explanatory variables were excluded from scenarios 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, respectively. Next, the direct effects of explanatory variables on YIELD were estimated for each hybrid, harvest, scenario, and type of path analysis. The variables EW, NGE, and HGM had stronger direct effects on YIELD in the first three scenarios and the variables EL and ED had stronger direct effects on YIELD in the other scenarios regardless of hybrid or harvest. The use of the ninth scenario of path analysis is recommended regardless of hybrid and harvest given the ease of explanatory variable measurement (EIH, EL, and ED), the low degree of multicollinearity and the good prediction of the path analysis (R 2 ≥ 0.78).
