Paternal pains of imprisonment: Incarcerated fathers, ethnic minority masculinity and resistance narratives

Abstract: According to official statistics, about half of the male prisoners in Norwegian prisons are fathers. At the same time, just over three prisoners in 10 are foreign nationals. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in a Norwegian remand prison, this article will discuss some of the problems imprisoned ethnic minority fathers are facing, and detail some of the solutions they employ. I will focus particularly on two narrative problem-solving strategies. One is the promotion of parental values based on a strong (paternali… Show more

“…What do I tell my children that they cannot see their father again?' This was a common refrain from the prisoners who had families and children (see also Ugelvik, 2014). There were degrees of distress evident in their recounting of their situations and 'hopelessness', 'despair', 'depression' and 'grief' were often terms related to their situation.…”

“…In the decades since, a rich body of literature has served to expand our understanding of the pains of imprisonment, taking into account its historical (Crewe ), spatial (Hancock and Jewkes ), and gendered dimensions (Bosworth ; Ugelvik ), as well as the extent to which long‐term and indeterminate detention poses additional strains and frustrations (Cohen and Taylor ; Crewe ). Recent research illustrates how the ‘reconfiguration of penal power’ in the late modern prison has also produced new burdens and frustrations, with the effect that the carceral experience is now ‘lighter’ – less brutal, oppressive and dehumanising – but ‘tighter’ – ‘gripping’ rather than weighing down on the prisoner (Crewe ).…”
