Patent ductus arteriosus closure using the amplatzer® vascular plug II for all anatomic variants

Abstract: We report the largest experience with the AVPII for PDA closure. The device was used in all morphologic types and small patients. It is low profile, easily repositioned, and had excellent results without complications. We contend that this is the most versatile device currently available.

“…This experience demonstrates that the AVPII is an effective and safe device to be used for PDA closure. The closure rate was as higher or better as reported for the regular ADO device and this has also been reported by others using the AVPII . In our own experience, the closure was routinely demonstrated before the patients leave the catheterization laboratory.…”

“…) were considered to be not ideal to be closed using a regular ADO or ADO II devices. Implantation of AVP II device demonstrated to be particularly useful when addressing the closure of PDA with these nonclassic morphologies and that has been also recently reported by others . It seems to us that this device fits remarkably well inside the ductal ampula particularly in tubular or elongated shape PDA filling it to obtain the occlusion.…”

“…Recently, AVP II was successfully used to close all types of PDAs in infants. [21] AVPs may emerge as more cost-effective devices for PDAs as compared to the ADO, especially in tubular PDA, which is not suitable to be closed by the duct occluder. [2]…”

“…However, caution should be exercised when using oversized devices for PVLs because of their tendency to elongate: proximal and distal discs tend to tilt toward the LV outflow tract and aorta, respectively, which raises the possibility of their obstructing the coronary arteries. 8 It should be noted that these Amplatzer vascular plug II devices can be delivered through smaller sheaths (5F or 6F)-an important advantage over septal occluder devices.…”
