Past, Present and Future Marine Microwave Satellite Missions in China

Abstract: Over the past 60 years, China has made fruitful achievements in the field of ocean microwave remote sensing satellite technology. A long-term plan has now been formulated for the development of Chinese ocean satellites, as well as the construction of a constellation of ocean dynamic environmental and ocean surveillance satellites. These will gradually form China’s ocean monitoring network from space, thereby playing important roles in future ocean resource and environmental monitoring, marine disaster preventi… Show more

“…HY‐2B is the first routine satellite of the marine dynamic environment program planned by China (NSOAS, 2021). It focuses on the variations in ocean‐surface height and ocean environment monitoring, similar to its predecessor (HY‐2A) (Lin & Jia, 2022; J. Wang, Aouf, et al., 2020). A GPS receiver developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) is used to generate precise orbit solutions, and an official target accuracy of 2–3 cm in radial directions is specified (NSOAS, 2021).…”

“…We hypothesize that the Chinese's rapid rate of publication in the satellite altimetry sector is related to their increasing investments in the ocean and space industries. From 2011 through 2020, China has launched a series of altimetry missions, designated as HY-2A/B/C/D [5].…”

“…Until now, a number of satellite radar altimeters have been successfully launched and operated by various international agencies with the support of, primarily, the United States, the European Union, China, Japan, and India. As shown in Figure 1, the past and current satellite altimeters, including the ESA-1/2, Envisat, Sentinel-3A/B, Jason-1/2/3, Sentinel-6, HY-2A/B/C/D, SARAL/AltiKa, CryoSat-2, and ICESat/ICESat-2, have offered a homogeneous, high-precision, and long time series of Earth observations, particularly over the ocean [5][6][7][8][9]. The nearly 30 years of high-quality satellite altimetry data have greatly promoted the development of marine geodesy and oceanography to chart the statics and dynamics of the ocean from space [10][11][12].…”

“…The remote sensing image recognition technique provides important technical support for the study of fishery information extraction, and is widely employed in various domains, e.g., marine planning and coastal development [5], topographic and geological exploration [6], disaster prevention and mitigation [7], and ecological protection [8]. The applications of this technology in the field of fisheries mainly pertain to the information extraction of aquaculture areas [9], environmental studies of fishing grounds [10], and the habitat analysis of fish species [11].…”
