Passively addressed FLC display possessing an inherent gray scale and memory

Abstract: Abstract— A passively addressed 64 × 64 ferroelectric liquid‐crystal display (FLCD) has been developed. The display matrix has a 33 × 33 mm2 aperture, and the FLC layer thickness is 5.2 ± 0.2 μm. The display device operates with a frame frequency of 30 Hz (at Vrow = ±18 V, Vcol = ±9 V, T = 23°C), generating a continuous gray scale which can be memorized for more than 10 days after the driving voltage is switched off. A new approach for multiplex electronic addressing of the FLCD gray scale is proposed. The con… Show more

“…A PI aligning layer with this struc ture possesses electron type conductivity [19][20][21], which ensures the absence of bound charges on the interface between two dielectrics-SmC* and orien tant. This kind of orientant with electron type conduc tivity, which is determined by the discontinuous poly mer film on the semiconducting ITO layer, ensures very good uniformity of the SmC* layer [20,21].…”

“…The formation of a discontinuous aligning film takes place when the polymer solution flows over the rough ITO surface, while the island size is determined by the polymer solution concentration and the spin coating speed [19,20]. The parameters of a discontin uous aligning layer were determined using a Solver (NT-MDT) atomic force microscope, an IR VASE spectroscopic ellipsometer, and a Quanta 600 F scan ning electron microscope [20].…”

“…Considering the performance above, FLC based bistable display can win in all ways which can show 10 microsecond response time with 10V/um driving voltage (response time can be even in sub-microsecond range with 40V/um [1] voltage) and over 1000 contrast ratio. With special material and structure design, gray scale of the display panel has also been achieved with fixed frame time [2].…”

“…firstly introduced surface stabilized FLC(SSFLC) to realize the bi-stable display which offered limited bi-stability of several hours. After that, a new photo-alignment technique has been used to solve some of the problem [2,3]. In the new method, a linear polarized UV radiation on the azobenzene sulfuric dye, SD-1 [4,5], induces the photo-anisotropy which can serve as alignment layer for liquid crystal displays (LCDs).…”
