Particulate matter and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a selected athletic hall: ambient concentrations, origin and effects on human health

Abstract: Abstract. The paper presents the results of research on the concentration of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with total suspended particles (TSP) and their respirable fraction (PM4) in one of the Warsaw sports halls. Samples of dust were collected for 15 days simultaneously inside and outside (atmospheric air) of the sports hall. The obtained data allowed calculating diagnostic ratios indicating the origin of the PAHs and selected indicators of cumulative exposure to the PAH mixture. Both… Show more

“…As was mentioned in the description of sampling sites, Targówek is one of the districts of Warsaw, in which low housing, mostly from the 1970s, constitutes a significant percentage of the total housing development. Thousands of these buildings are not connected to the central heating network [17,47]. Accordingly, in the heating season, emission from hard coal, wood, and sometimes trash burning in old tenement houses and single-family houses is the main source of fine PM and its precursors both inside and outside the hall.…”

“…Only natural ventilation is used in the building. During working days, the hall is used by students from the neighboring school, and in the afternoons and weekends, the hall is used for training and inter-school competitions [17]. The hall is open from morning (6.00) to evening (22.00), Monday to Sunday, and is systematically frequented by children, adolescents, and adults.…”

“…A significant increase of PAHs in the atmosphere has a negative impact on the environment and human health. PAHs have mutagenic and carcinogenic effects (Kozielska et al, 2015;Kuskowska et al, 2018;Rogula-Kozłowska et al, 2018. The strongest carcinogenic compounds are benzo [a]pyrene and dibenzo [a,h]anthracene.…”
