Impact of Processing Parameters on Contactless Emulsification via Corona Discharge

A contactless emulsification method is presented using corona discharge. The corona discharge forms using a pin-to-plate configuration, creating a non-uniform electric field. This results in a simultaneous electrohydrodynamic (EHD) pumping of silicone oil and an electroconvection of water droplets that accelerate and submerge inside the oil, leading to a continuous water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion formation process. The impact of the oil viscosity and corona generating AC and DC electric fields (i.e., voltage and frequency) on the characteristics of the emulsions is studied. The emulsification power consumption using the AC and DC electric fields is calculated and compared to traditional emulsion formation methods. While using the DC electric field results in the formation of uniform emulsions, the AC electric field is readily available and uses less power for the emulsification. This is facile, contactless, and energy-efficient for the continuous formation of W/O emulsions.

A method is proposed that uses electrophoretic deposition (EPD) to fabricate the titania (TiO2) photocatalyst filter and then successfully modifies it by lithium nitrate (LiNO3) to be visible light responsive such that the modified photocatalyst filter effectively degrades gaseous formaldehyde. The performance of degrading gaseous formaldehyde is evaluated in the photocatalytic circulation reactor for different temperature and light sources. The results show that the modified TiO2photocatalyst filter has much better degradation performance for gaseous formaldehyde than the original TiO2photocatalyst filter regardless of light source, and the performance is better at the higher ambient temperature. The best total average degradation performance of the modified photocatalyst filter is about 9.2% and 16.3% higher than the original photocatalyst filter (P-25, Degussa) for the UVA and visible irradiation, respectively, at 26°C.

EPD is a technique where charged particles in a stable colloidal suspension are moved through the liquid due to electric field and deposited on an oppositely charged conductive substrate, forming the intended material or device. EPD enables fabrication of a wide range of structures from traditional to advanced materials, from nanometric thin films to a fraction of 1 mm thick films, and from porous scaffolds to highly compact coatings. These structures include different compositions with complex shapes and structures which can be formed in a relatively short experimentation time by simple apparatus. This review presents the fundamentals, mechanisms, and characteristics of EPD along with its past and recent applications.
