Design thinking has recently gained significant attention as a potential approach to address major global problems. Although its practice is proven to contribute to advance organizational efficiency and address user needs, lack of understanding about its practice in social organizations limits our understanding about its social context. With this background, we study how users persuade social organizations to adopt design thinking. We conducted a qualitative study in four social organizations in India during 2008–2013 and interviewed 38 respondents to answer our research question. Our results indicate that the designer roles are blurred when social organizations adopt design thinking, where users in the form of interconnecting agency reduce the gap between designers and communities.

Escuela AbstractThe participation-based design of a social media strategy for health organizations, and the evaluation of the experience in the Reina Sofía University Hospital are presented. The methodology of collaborative and multidisciplinary design was developed in five phases: identification of target actors; consensus on objectives, channels and content lines; results analysis and feedback; (pre)campaign design; collaborative elaboration of social media strategy. The evaluation included social media monitoring (quantitative evaluation of external communication) and content analysis of semi-structured interviews with hospital managers (qualitative evaluation of internal communication). Results show the positive impact on the external communication and the participants' satisfaction with the co-design, revealing that participatory and interdisciplinary approach, managerial support and professionalization represent the main aspects of social media presence for health organizations.

2018) Examining situated design practices: Nurses' transformations towards genuine participation. Design Studies, vol. X, no. X, pp. X-X. AbstractWe scrutinise the concrete practices of participants' engagement in participatory design through an empirical case in which nurses from different hospital wards began as reluctant users, but gradually engaged in processes approaching genuine participation. We expand a newly proposed, psychologically inspired perspective into a conceptual frame to investigate transformations towards genuine participation. This analytical lens elucidates how participants engage in becoming authentic, credible, attentive and present in participatory endeavours, and how this affects reflection and learning. The case includes the designer's process of becoming a genuine participant during the project. By offering a new take on the concept of genuine participation using a dimension characterised by a genuine, focused presence, we offer our lessons learned from applying the framework.The concepts, meanings and practices associated with participation vary enormously.
