Examining situated design practices: Nurses' transformations towards genuine participation

Abstract: 2018) Examining situated design practices: Nurses' transformations towards genuine participation. Design Studies, vol. X, no. X, pp. X-X. AbstractWe scrutinise the concrete practices of participants' engagement in participatory design through an empirical case in which nurses from different hospital wards began as reluctant users, but gradually engaged in processes approaching genuine participation. We expand a newly proposed, psychologically inspired perspective into a conceptual frame to investigate trans… Show more

“…Feedback is a primary component of social learning and CoPs (Cummings et al, 2016;Popescu, 2014). It is also strongly associated with processes in design and related areas (HCI, architecture, engineering) where real stakeholder participation, like user feedback, evaluations, expert reviews and studio critiquing are integral elements in the work cycle (Adams et al, 2016;Huet et al, 2007;Østergaard et al, 2018).…”

“…The student succeeded to establish genuine participation with the medical secretaries by allowing them to (1) respect their own interests, (2) being open to how they felt about the re-allocation, and their reflections on their own opinions about this, and, (3) willingly make them contribute to the achievement of the goals of the project. These three characteristics of genuine participation used in the project, were introduced in [32, p. 5], elaborated into a conceptual framework for genuine participation in [33], and supporting PD techniques are outlined in [42]. This approach to genuine participation transformed medical secretaries' understandable skeptical attitude into a shared and agreed-upon pilot implementation with a "win-win" prospect for medical secretaries as well as physicians.…”

“…Aligning with the idea that caring creates relation(ship)s [1], we understand mutual learning for both data allies and partnering designer as inclusive of learning both from and with each other, cf. [64]. The partnering designer served as a 'sounding board' during difficult times or a resource for thinking about alternatives such as potential partnering, scholarly products, and professional venues.…”
