Participation in Victim-Offender Mediation and the Prevalence of Subsequent Delinquent Behavior: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Objective: This article reports the results of a meta-analytic study of the relationship between participation in victim-offender mediation (VOM) and the prevalence of subsequent delinquent behavior. Method: Analyses were conducted with the results of 15 studies, conducted at 19 different sites, with a sample of 9,307 juveniles. Results: The results suggested that methodological factors explained all the significant variation across sites and studies in the magnitude of the difference between non-VOM and VOM g… Show more

“…Meta-analysis studies including control or comparison groups or conducted using only VOM procedures continue to find a positive impact of diversion versus dispositions (Latimer et al, 2005;Nugent et al, 2001). Findings showed that those who participated in these procedures recidivated 30%-32% less than non-participating juveniles (Nugent et al, 2001;Nugent, Williams & Umbreit, 2004). …”

“…Research indicates that these approaches are often effective in yielding high rates of participant satisfaction, promoting high restitution completion rates (Umbreit et al 1998(Umbreit et al , 2001(Umbreit et al , 2002(Umbreit et al , 2005 and reducing recidivism (Bonta et al 2006;Nugent et al 2003). In addition, some evidence indicates that restorative conferences effectively addresses the harm caused by offenses including family violence and holds offenders accountable (Bazemore and Schiff 2005;Calhoun and Pelech 2010;Pennell and Burford 2000;Umbreit and Vos 2000;UNODC 2006).…”

“…In recent years, this body of literature has expanded greatly and the research overwhelmingly documents "the positive impact of restorative practices at multiple levels, with case types ranging from first-time offenders and misdemeanants to more serious chronic and violent offenders" (Bazemore & Elis 2007, p. 397; also see Hayes 2007). The authors argue that in contrast to empirical research about treatment programs for offenders the outcomes of which are not uniformly successful, the positive research results of restorative justice programs are more consistent: "Most studies of restorative programmes, including recent meta-analyses (Bonta et al 2000;nugent et al 2003) indicate some positive impact […] and some suggest that restorative programmes may have equal or stronger impacts than many treatment programmes. " The data on the positive impact for the victims of crimes are particularly strong.…”
