Participation frequency and performance of horses in national shows of Campolina and Mangalarga Marchador breeds

Abstract: This study aimed to determine the participation frequency and competitive performance of Campolina and Mangalarga Marchador horses in national shows concerning marcha type, sex, and age. To that end, the trial results of national horse shows between 2007 and 2017, comprising 1,781 Campolina and 5,239 Mangalarga Marchador animals, were extracted from the databases of the breeders' associations of each breed. The results regarding participation frequency in these events and the performance achieved by horses wer… Show more

“…The low frequency of participation of Mangalarga horses in different national shows, equally observed in a study on Mangalarga Marchador and Campolina breeds (Nascimento et al, 2019), may also be associated with the poor performance of many of those animals in the contests, partially because the high level of competitors makes the competitions very tight. Thus, breeders interrupt the career of poorly qualified horses early to concentrate their attention and efforts only in those that achieved better results.…”

“…Therefore, new phenotyping strategies, such as kinematic (MOLINA et al, 2008;SOLÉ et al, 2014) The technician correlations ranged from 0.31 (C with S) to 0.98 (R with De), showing that the way scores are given is not uniformly across traits. Such reasoning can be pointed because the Campolina horse can perform two types of gaits: marcha batida or marcha picada (ABCCCAMPOLINA, 2018;NASCIMENTO et al, 2019). The scores may then be conditioned to the gait type, and the sequence in which each technician gave the scores may influence the direction of those correlations.…”
