Partially fluorinated sulfonated poly(arylene sulfone)s blended with polybenzimidazole

Abstract: A partially fluorinated and sulfonated poly(arylene sulfone) (SPSO) was successfully synthesized via nucleophilic polycondensation of 2,2‐bis(4‐fluorophenyl)hexafluoro‐propane with 4,4′‐thiobisbenzenethiol (TBBT). In a second step, the prepared poly(arylene sulfide) was oxidized to SPSO. The polymer was blended with the polybenzimidazole PBIOO® to obtain a mechanically stable membrane. This film was compared with other polymer blends, which were synthesized in our group in the last years. We were especially in… Show more

“…Ionic crosslinks can also be achieved by casting mixed solutions of acid polymers and basic polymers or monomers (4,4-diaminodiphenylether) [141][142][143][144][145][146][147][148][149][150][151][152][153]. Acid polymers are for example SPEEK, SPES, SPPSU.…”

“…4 In the past decade, much effort has been made on the development of aromatic hydrocarbon polymers as alternative PEM materials to Nafion, because some drawbacks of Nafion, such as a limited operating temperature range of up to 80 C, high cost and high methanol permeability, seriously limit its industrial application. [5][6][7][8] However, most of the sulfonated aromatic polymers, such as sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone), [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17] sulfonated polyimides, [18][19][20][21] sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) 22 and sulfonated polyphenylene, 23,24 showed much lower proton conductivities at a low relative humidity (RH), even though at a high RH, the proton conductivity was comparable or higher than that of Nafion. This may be attributed to the lower acidity of the aryl or alkyl sulfonic acid and less effective phase separation of the sulfonated aromatic polymers.…”

“…The biggest dilemma in the use of PA doped PBI as a PEM is the balancing of thermomechanical stability and acid loading which in turn controls the proton conductivity and hence the cell performance. Several techniques have been developed to tackle this problem and among these (a) the synthesis of new PBI structures, (b) the development of a new membrane fabrication method and (c) preparations of blends and nanocomposites etc . are the most discussed methods.…”
