Partial HELLP syndrome: Maternal, perinatal, subsequent pregnancy and long‐term maternal outcomes

Abstract: Partial and complete HELLP syndrome are not distinct groups based on neonatal, long-term and subsequent pregnancy outcomes. They probably represent a continuum in the natural evolution of the same disease.

“…Present study showing significantly increased incidence of eclampsia in HELLP syndrome group and partial HELLP syndrome than that in preeclampsia .similar results are documented by Rakshit et al and Aydin S et al 5,8 Placental findings seen with bad perinatal prognosis in both HELLP and partial HELLP syndrome. Usually mother with altered liver functions received fresh frozen plasma and mother with low platelets (<50000/cu mm) received platelet transfusion.…”

“…There is now considerable evidence of long-term cardiovascular outcomes in patients afflicted with pre-eclampsia, and if we believe, the HELLP is part of the spectrum of pre-eclampsia, these effects would apply as well 27 28. Chronic hypertension developed in 22–33% of HELLP patients after ∼5 years 29 30. Further metabolic derangements such as diabetes, obesity, thyroid disease, renal disease have been described as long-term maternal complications; however, these reports are retrospective without a comparative group 29 30.…”

Although not commonly reported, the psychological effects of pre-eclampsia/HELLP including anxiety and depression are increased, especially in those who are anticipating additional pregnancies 29 30.…”

“…Complete HELLP syndrome (cHELLP) is defined by the presence of all of the three laboratory criteria according to the Tennessee Classification System [15-17]. Partial HELLP syndrome is defined by the presence of one or two features of HELLP, but not the complete form [14,15]. However a recent study has shown that partial and complete HELLP syndromes are not two distinct entities.…”
