Partial-Response Signaling

Abstract: Absfrucf-This paper presents a unified study of partial-response signaling (PRS) systems and extends previous work on the comparison of PRS schemes. A PRS system model is introduced which enables the investigation of PRS schemes from the viewpoint of spectral properties such as bandwidth, nulls, and continuity of derivatives. Several desirable properties of PRS systems and their relation to system functions are indicated and a number of useful schemes, some of them not previously analyzed, are presented. These… Show more

“…3 are (28) where and is the unknown phase shift between the delayed and undelayed optical carrier at the input of the optical hybrid. Assuming that the detectors bandwidth is much larger than the laser linewidth and thermal noise dominant over shot noise, the photodetected signals are (29) (30) where and are two independent zero-mean white (over the detector bandwidth) Gaussian processes with twosided PSD , all the parameters being defined in Section IV. By substituting (10) and (28) in (29) and (30), we finally obtain the normalized complex signal in (11).…”

“…Three principal areas relating to advances in systems due to signal-processing can be identified, (i) Improvements in channel qualities: This includes equalisation methods such as partial response, adaptive filters, decision feedback techniques [3][4][5].…”

“…The use of electrical duobinary signaling [5] for high-speed backplane transmission to accomplish the two tasks of bandwidth reduction and simplification of implementation relative to other approaches was proposed for the first time in [6]. Duobinary takes advantage of the inherent rolloff of the backplane channel, which results in an architecture that is very simple to build.…”
