Partial nephrectomy for T1 renal cancer can achieve an equivalent oncological outcome to radical nephrectomy with better renal preservation: the way to go

Abstract: Compared with radical nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy can prevent chronic kidney disease and still achieve an excellent oncological outcome for T1 renal tumours, in particular T1a tumours and tumours with a low R.E.N.A.L. score.

“…Because when achieving RCC free status, preserving of the renal function must be the core topic of the process. In previous studies, NSS was reported to be associated with preserved renal function compared to RN [ 20 , 21 ].…”

“…We identified 15 studies pertaining to PN in the management of RCC in 3,222 lesions with median follow-up of 46.4 months (►Table 4). 37,38,40,48,49,53,54,64,65,67,68,[76][77][78] Average tumor size was 2.51 cm, and 53 local recurrences were reported resulting in recurrence rate of 1.6%. Of the 616 lesions treated with robotic-assisted PN, no local recurrences were reported within the average follow-up of 41.9 months.…”

“…In the previous decade, an offset occurred from radical nephrectomy towards the necessity of nephron-sparing techniques (partial nephrectomy). Preservation surgical techniques have as a goal to preserve renal function and at the same time to have identical oncological results as in radical nephrectomies 14,15 . Also when considering quality of life, renal function and overall survival the majority of studies agree that partial nephrectomy has a significant advantage over radical nephrectomy [16][17][18][19] .…”
