Partial discharge diagnostics for gas insulated substations

Abstract: A defect such as a free metallic particle or stress-raising edge on an electrode could lead to breakdown in a gas insulated substation (GIs), but may be detected by the partial discharges it generates. Of the various detection means available, most success has been achieved with either acoustic transducers to detect sound waves from the discharge, or electrical couplers to pick up the ultra-high-frequency (UHF) signals generated inside the GIS chambers. All new GIs in the UK are fitted with internal couplers f… Show more

“…FAST-ACTING DISCONNECTOR: SETUP In HVac MTS, air insulated buses are linked by gas insulated circuit breakers, disconnectors, and earthing switches, primarily to save space [29]. Disconnectors designed for this application are capable of withstanding up to ten times higher recovery voltages than GIS disconnectors, due to the larger substation dimensions and the increased inductance per unit length.…”

“…Gas insulated switchgear (GIS) having a visual effect is commercially available online, and portable systems using the UHF sensors are installed and operated in power company, railroad and large plants [1,2]. However, the live diagnosis depending on the classic method, such as existing infrared cameras and leakage current measurement method in the case of ultra high voltage switchgear, is not effective for the prevention of power outage accidents, because the switchgear internal structure is complex, and it is difficult to determine the occurrence of partial discharge [3]. As a live-diagnosis technique of GIS, UHF technology was applied to the switchboard, and the possibility of application studied [4,5].…”

“…Typically requiring high-speed sampling to capture PD pulses with sufficient resolution, phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) plots can reveal defect-specific information that can be used for classification and defect diagnosis. The RF method has been applied to on-line plant items including transformers [18], GIS [19] and cables [20], and automated phase-resolved diagnostic methods have been developed based on techniques including fuzzy classifiers [21], support vector machines [22] and knowledgebased systems [23].…”
