Part-time or Full-time Employment: Choices and Constraints

Abstract: This article explores nurses' working-hour practices in Norwegian nursing homes through a career path. Although the nursing profession is dominated by women and is a typical part-time occupation, this study found variations in working-hour patterns among nurses. These variations suggest that nurses not only have different career patterns but also that the working hours of individual nurses vary throughout a career. “…Surprisingly, working as a part-timer was more significant with women whereby working full time/long hours was more significant with men (Kjeldstad and Nymoen, 2012). Ingstad and Hedlund (2017) stated that the public sectors offered flexibility on the well-being of their employees and household rather than the private sector hence, they were given the choices to join the public sectors, whether as a full-timer or vice versa.
