Parity violation in chiral structure creation under femtosecond laser irradiation in silica glass?

Abstract: The paper addresses the creation of circular optical properties from a femtosecond laser light beam with a linear polarization in an achiral material (glass) under an orthogonal incidence. In this situation, all aspects of the experiment are achiral and therefore should not give rise to chiral property creation. From that observation, we propose an interpretation that involves the action of a light-induced torque on the matter carrying a light-induced dielectric moment. We found that a direct current (DC) elec… Show more

“…Furthermore, we also observed that the 3D rotation of nanograting only occurs in one scan direction, while it disappears in the reversed scan direction; the result is thought to be another type of quill writing effect [22]. Most recently, Poumellec et al suggested that the non-reciprocal writing effect can create a chiral structure in an achiral material (namely, pure silica glass), which reveals a new parity violation arising from the chirality of current ultrafast laser processing systems [23,24].…”

“…Des travaux récents établissent qu'un faisceau laser femtoseconde polarisé linéairement et focalisé dans un verre sous une géométrie axialement symétrique est capable de briser la symétrie chirale [5]. Ici, le verre de silice SiO 2 est achiral, mais l'irradiation laser femtoseconde donne lieu à une propriété optique chirale : un pouvoir rotatoire pouvant atteindre plusieurs centaines de degrés par mm, ainsi que du dichroïsme circulaire.…”

“…Thirdly, at an intermediate energy range, structures with modulated oxygen concentration form [17]. If the fabrication laser polarization is linear and several hundred laser pulses per spot irradiate the material, strongly birefringent self-assembled nanogratings develop out of these structures [17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24]. The nanogratings are known to align perpendicular to the writing laser polarization with a period p nano ≈ λ w /(2n).…”
