Parents’ attitudes, beliefs and uptake of the school-based human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program in Jakarta, Indonesia – A quantitative study

Abstract: The Indonesian government has provided free HPV vaccines for female students in years 5–6 in Jakarta since 2016. We examined parents’ beliefs, attitudes and intentions to allow their daughters to receive the HPV vaccine, as well as the uptake of the vaccine. This cross-sectional study was conducted between September and November 2019 in Jakarta. We invited 680 parents or guardians of year 6 female students from 33 primary schools who were offered the free HPV vaccine to complete a questionnaire; 484 (71%) resp… Show more

“…This follows the TPB theory, where according to theory, the decision to do something is caused by a conscious stimulus to do something called intention. The existence of this intention is the beginning of the formation of a person's behaviour (Wijayanti et al, 2021) Accepting H6 and H7 hypotheses became the subsequent findings in this study. We found a path coefficient value of 0.173, which is close to +1, a T-Statistic value of 2.099 (> 1.96), and a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05) on the relationship between subjective norms and job pursuit intention, meanwhile, on the relationship between perceived behavioural control with job pursuit intention found path coefficients 0.264 which is close to +1 value, T-Statistic value is 3.897 (> 1.96), and the p-value is 0.000 (<0.05).…”

“…This proves that the product brand is not the only information that directly influences an individual to take specific actions, such as job pursuit intention. This can be identified using the TPB theory, where Wijayanti et al (2021) state that the theory of planned behaviour is a theory that has a foundation related to the perspective of beliefs that can influence a person to take specific actions. This perspective is a combination of various characteristics and attributes of information to form the will to behave.…”

“…This is supported by studies done in Italy, Nigeria, Taiwan, and Indonesia. 29 , 31 , 40 , 48 This result might suggest that the perceived difficulties in arranging the vaccination program outside of a school-based system due to financial, transportation, or time constraints. In the same way, without considering the cost of the vaccine as a barrier, parents will decide whether or not their daughters can get the vaccination that providing the vaccination for free enhanced parents’ perceived control.…”

“…In the same way, without considering the cost of the vaccine as a barrier, parents will decide whether or not their daughters can get the vaccination that providing the vaccination for free enhanced parents’ perceived control. 48 Moreover, parents have confidence in their ability to determine whether to endorse the HPV vaccine for their daughters. Indeed, administering the HPV vaccine at the community level in village based will ease the acceptance of the vaccine and the uptake as well.…”

“…However, this topic is scarcely studied in the general population and diverse across various countries [ 25 ]. Few studies explored this topic in Indonesia in-depth: a prior study more focused on parent’s attitudes, beliefs, and uptake of the HPV vaccination [ 26 ], a study only took samples from women in single primary care about knowledge and behavior regarding CC [ 27 ], a study was conducted only in junior high school students with tiny sample [ 28 ], a study did research on women population about HPV vaccination and CC screening [ 29 ], and two studies only assessed knowledge, attitude, and acceptability of HPV vaccination among university students [ 30 , 31 ]. To the best of our knowledge, no reported data on the KAP related to HPV, CC, and vaccination among urban citizens in Indonesia, especially those reporting KAP as a united link of public health construct.…”
