Parental suspicion of hearing loss in children with otitis media with effusion

Abstract: In other words, if we had relied on parental suspicion as the first screening, at least 80% of the OME cases would have been missed. We conclude that the parental suspicion of hearing loss is inadequate for the identification of mild hearing loss as caused by OME. Health education is recommended to improve parental awareness of the disease.

“…Only 8% of children with OME visited ENT clinic and 3.5 % of them had ENT operations (adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy and ventilation tubes). Health education of parents helps to increase their awareness of this silent disease and this has been recommended by Lo et al (41) In our study, 23% of children with OME had recurrent AOM compared to 7% in normal children, (p<0.0001). In the multivariate regression model, we found recurrent AOM to be a strong predictor of OME in this age(OR=4.914, 95% CI: 2.677-9.02).…”

“…Hearing impairment in the group may also be masked by their intellectual impairment, thus overlooked by both parents and teachers, though similarly low parental awareness was also noted recently among a general pediatric population in the same geographic region [51]. Appropriate parent/teacher education is necessary to ensure optimal audiological intervention.…”
