Parental and life-course influences on symptomatic airflow obstruction

Abstract: Few studies have examined the contribution of life-course factors in explaining familial aggregation of chronic lung conditions. Using data from the 1958 British Birth Cohort, a life-course approach was used to examine whether, and how, exposure to risk factors through one's life explained the association between parental respiratory disease history and symptomatic airflow obstruction (AO). Cohort participants (n=6212) were characterised in terms of parental respiratory disease history and symptomatic AO at 45… Show more

“…69,70 A study from the British birth cohort in 1958 showed that adulthood asthma and smoking status explained about half of the effect of parental respiratory disease history on COPD, and the cumulative effect of asthma (childhood and adulthood reporting of asthma) explained 19% of the effect of parental respiratory disease history on COPD. 86 The results of heterogeneity analysis indicated that the studies of childhood pneumonia, childhood asthma (cohort study), mother smoking in utero and CEIPV (male) were moderately or highly heterogeneous. There are some possible reasons for the heterogeneity: First, these studies differed in race of participants, geographic location and adjusted covariates.…”

“…28 Further, living with family members who adopt COPD risk behaviors (such as smoking) in childhood may influence the prevalence of COPD in adulthood. 29,30 An estimated 14% of COPD worldwide is attributable to occupational exposures. 31 A significant relationship between COPD prevalence and occupational exposure was observed in a national study, as well as in Jiangsu, Jiangxi, and Hebei Provinces; 7,9,10,12 however, we did not detect a significant association with occupational exposure in our study, consistent with findings from Anhui Province and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.…”

“…[13][14][15] Furthermore, airflow obstruction is strongly related to increased breathlessness, 1 2 12-15 with asthma being an especially prevalent risk factor at younger ages. 16 While heritability in asthma [17][18][19] and lung function [20][21][22] is well established, it is unknown whether breathlessness clusters across generations. No study has evaluated whether parents with breathlessness are more likely to have offspring with breathlessness or the potential factors underpinning any such association.…”
