Impact of early life exposures on COPD in adulthood: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Early life represents a critical period for the development and growth of the lungs. Adverse exposures in this stage may drive the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Thus, we quantitatively evaluated the impact of different early life exposures on COPD in adulthood. The PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library electronic databases were searched for articles published from January 2001 to October 2020. A total of 30 studies (795,935 participants) met the criteria and were included in the re… Show more

“…Recent research on lung function trajectories shows that low peak lung function in early adulthood increases the risk of COPD later in life and is associated with a higher prevalence of respiratory, cardiovascular, and metabolic comorbidities and premature death. 8 , 9 A recently published meta-analysis 10 found an association between risk of COPD in adulthood and early life factors, such as maternal smoking, low birth weight, childhood respiratory infections and childhood asthma.…”

“…12 reviews identified risk factors in early life [ 50 , 52 , 57 , 68 , 70 , 72 , 80 , 85 , 92 , 93 , 94 ]. Six of these focused on respiratory problems in early life and COPD risk [ 50 , 57 , 72 , 85 , 93 , 94 ], with found mORs ranging between 2.23 (95% CI 1.63–3.07) [ 50 ] and 3.44 (95% CI 1.33–8.90) [ 72 ]. Additionally, D uan et al .…”

“…A history of childhood asthma is among the risk factors for early-adulthood COPD and lung function impairments. 20,[33][34][35] To our best knowledge, the correlation between childhood asthma severity and lung function growth remains unclear in Japanese. 25,27,36,37 However, poor asthma control in adults and frequent exacerbations are known to cause lung function decline, which facilitates the development of COPD.…”
