Parasitological and biochemical studies on cutaneous leishmaniasis in Shara’b District, Taiz, Yemen

Abstract: BackgroundThe leishmaniasis is a group of diseases caused by intracellular haemoflagellate protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania. Leishmaniasis has diverse clinical manifestations; cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is the most common form of leishmaniasis which is responsible for 60% of disability-adjusted life years. CL is endemic in Yemen. In Shara’b there is no reference study available to identify the prevalence of endemic diseases and no investigation has been conducted for diagnosing the diseases.Method… Show more

“…Herein, treatment with Ag-NPs green synthesized with M. oleifera leaf extract may protect cells from damage, demise and dysfunction that caused by cutaneous leishmaniosis-induced oxidative stress. The present results obtained for antioxidant enzyme activities are in accordance to several authors who found significant reduction in GPx in skin of infected mice and attributed these changes to the number of deleterious effects due to the accumulation of superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide [ 43 ].…”

“…Cases were collected at Maarshorin and Khan-shikhon Center in Idlep-Syria. Diagnosis was confirmed clinically, as well as by laboratory demonstration of the parasite in the lesions by direct smears using microscopic examination as mentioned early by [10], briefly, tissue scrapings performed with staining the specimen with by Giemsa stain. The lesions cleaned and any eschars or exudates was removed.…”

“…Taiz governorate (44.01° E, 13.34° N) is located in the southwestern part of Yemen, 280 km from Sana'a, the capital. Shar'ab district was selected because a recent study con rmed that it is endemic for CL [10]. The ve abovementioned areas of Shar'ab district were selected because the same study showed that these areas had the highest prevalence of CL infection [10].…”

“…In Yemen, although the rst report of CL was documented in 1933, and the disease represented about 5% of skin diseases [5,6], little is known about the epidemiological features and temporospatial evolution of the disease. Previous studies have revealed that CL is mainly endemic in the northwestern, southwestern, and central highland areas of the country [7][8][9][10]. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 4,763 CL cases were reported in Yemen in 2018 [11].…”
