Parasitic Leiomyoma Peritoneum—A Rare Case

Abstract: Leiomyoma, benign tumors of smooth muscle origin, is one of the commonest uterine tumours in the reproductive age group and originates from the myometrium. While most leiomyomas are asymptomatic, they can grow and cause heavy and painful menstruation, painful sexual intercourse and urinary frequency and urgency. Extra uterine leiomyomas are rare, usually benign, they may theoretically arise from any anatomic site containing smooth muscle. Their presence in pre-peritoneal or within the anterior abdominal wall m… Show more

“…
[1] . The case being presented here is rare and interesting variant of leiomyoma observed in clinical practice, based on its growth pattern, often referred as parasitic leiomyoma, which is defined asas leiomyoma that has, due to poorly understood reasons, become partially or almost completely separated from the uterus to become autonomous to receive its main blood supply from another source [2] .

“…The prevalance of leiomyomas is up to 20-30% among women older that 35 years. 1 Another study have discovered increases of myoma prevalence in older age, almost 70% among >40 years old, with most incidences in African ethnic at >80% of all population. 2 Incidences among Asians and Caucasians are comparable, but some studies have shown that the incidences among Asians are lower.…”

“…Extrauterine events are rare and may occur in other anatomical locations. 1 Due to the rarity, the development patterns are reported in several works of literature, such as dissemination, benign metastasis, intravenous leiomyoma, retroperitoneal, and parasitic growth. They generally adhere to surrounding tissues, attain additional vascularization from surrounding organs and detach from their initial site as a parasite.…”
