A phylogenetic study of nematode species belonging to Nematoda: Oxyurida from India has been conducted using molecular characters. Molecular marker 18S rRNA (18S) from the nuclear gene was tested and analyses were conducted using the minimum evolution, maximum parsimony, and maximum likelihood methods. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that both of the species Hammerschmidtiella indicus and Thelandros scleratus clustered as sister species with species of Thelastoma and Leidynema, and Parapharyngodon, respectively. Interestingly, the results confirm the taxonomic status of H. indicus and T. scleratus from India.

“…Baylis (1936) considered it to be a synonym of the genus Thelandros Wedl, 1862 (historical survey -see Adamson 1981;Adamson and Nasher 1984;Goldberg 1999, 2005). However, later on, Freitas (1957) reinstated the genus Parapharyngodon Chatterji, 1933, which was accepted by several authors such as Skryabin et al (1960), Baruš and Coy Otero (1969), Baruš (1973), Sharpilo (1976), Adamson (1981), Adamson and Nasher (1984), Baker (1987), CastaZo-Fernández et al (1987), Ashour et al (1994), Bursey and Goldberg (1999, 2005, 2007a, Hering-Hagenbeck et al (2002). More than 40 well described species are assigned to the genus Parapharyngodon (see Goldberg 2005, 2007a, b); however, with all other species inquirendae and inadequately described species belonging to this genus, the total number of species reaches about 59.…”

A West African species of gecko, Tarentola parvicarinata Joger (Gekkonidae), collected in the Niokolo Koba National Park in East Senegal is a new host species for the nematode Parapharyngodon echinatus (Rudolphi, 1819). Fifty one specimens of P. echinatus were studied under a light microscope and thirteen specimens were studied for the first time by a scanning electron microscope. The main differences between P. echinatus and other African species, especially Parapharyngodon micipsae (Seurat, 1917), were in the shape of annules on body cuticle, broad lateral alae and their terminations, the shape of the distal extremity of the spicule and number of outgrowths at the anterior cloacal lip. For the purposes of DNA characterization, partial sequence of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rRNA) was obtained from two specimens of P. echinatus. This is the first published sequence of a species from the family Pharyngodonidae.

“…The only pharyngodonid nematode species recorded so far from Sri Lanka are Parapharyngodon acanthura (Linstow, 1904), a « species inquirenda » according to Adamson and Nasher (1984), from the garden lizard Calotes versicolor, and P. megaloon (Linstow, 1906), also a « species inquirenda » named only from inade quately described female specimens, from the gecko Hemidactylus leschenaulti (see : Adamson, 1981). Baylis (1936), however, lists P. maplestoni Chatterji, 1933 from C. versicolor and Hemidactylus flavoviridis in Sri Lanka, an identification which is somewhat doubtful.…”

SUMMARY. A trematode and nematodes are reported for the first time from endemic burrowing scincines of Sri Lanka, namely the cosmopolitan trematode Mesocoelium monas (Rudolphi, 1819) from the small intestine of Nessia burtoni ; and the nematodes Kalicephalus brachycephalus Maplestone, 1931 from the stomach of Nessia smithi ; and Meteterakis sinharajensis Crusz and Ching, 1976 and Parapharyngodon adamsoni sp. nov., both from the large and small intestines and rectum of Chalcidoseps thwaitesi, N. burtoni, N. didactyla and N. smithi. The new species is distinguished from other species of the genus mostly by the relatively small size; very short and characteristically shaped male caudal appendage, which is generally about half the length of th spicule; and the very close, almost fused, ventral arrangement of the pair of papillae on it, which is the last of four pairs of male caudal papillae. There is also more evidence of burrowing herpetofauna having parasites similar to those, but much reduced in number and variety, of sympatric non-burrowing forms, from which it was derived.
