Paraoxonase and arylesterase activity of serum PON-1 enzyme in psoriatic patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Human serum paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is a critical antioxidant defense system against lipid oxidation. Decreased PON-1 activity has been associated with systemic oxidative stress in several disease states. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of plasma/serum concentrations of PON-1 paraoxonase and arylesterase activity in psoriasis, a chronic immune-mediated and inflammatory skin disease. The electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched from inception to November 2021. In to… Show more

“…Paraoxonase (PON1) is an HDL‐related esterase with antiatherogenic properties as it protects lipoproteins and arterial cells against oxidation by hydrolysing lipid peroxides such as cholesteryl esters and phospholipids 47 . PON1 also inhibits the accumulation of oxidized phospholipids formed by peroxynitrite by hydrolysing phosphatidylcholine (PC) isoprostanes and PC core aldehydes.…”

“…A recent review showed that PON1 was lower in the serum of asthmatic patients, but it seemed that it was not correlated with the severity of the disease [ 77 ]. The same group investigated its activity in psoriasis with strongly reduced PON1 levels, but no differences were found in arylesterase activity [ 78 ]. PCOS can be associated with PON1 deficiency; however, mostly depending on the polymorphism, in Kashmiri women only, 108C/T, but not 55L/M genes, were associated with PCOS, increasing the chance of developing metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance [ 79 ].…”

“…In the case of Parkinson's disease, it is the accumulating dopaminergic neurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl-tetrahydropyridine of the chemical structure, similar to OPs, which interacts with PON1 [65]. Some new reports are available concerning the role of PON1 in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease [67], psoriasis [68] or chronic kidney disease [69]. A recent meta-analysis [70] has shown that the POase and AREase activities of PON1 are decreased among patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) when compared to healthy control group.…”
