Paraoxonase Activity and Oxidative Status in Patients with Tinnitus

Abstract: Background and ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxanase-1 (PON) activity, total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), and the oxidative stress index (OSI) in tinnitus; and to compare the results with data from healthy subjects.Subjects and MethodsA total of 114 subjects-54 patients with tinnitus and 60 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Serum PON activity, TOS, TAS, and OSI levels were measured.ResultsIn the tinnitus group, TAS, and PON were significantly … Show more

“…Following noise exposure, levels of oxidative stress were significantly increased compared to normal animals, and hearing function sharply declined. A recent study showed that tinnitus patients express significantly higher total oxidant status and oxidative index levels compared to control subjects (Koç et al, 2016 ) which can possibly cause dysfunctions in the microcirculation of the inner ear (Neri et al, 2002 , 2006 ). The exact role of oxidative stress in tinnitus is still under debate.…”

“…As the oxidant molecules may affect each other, TOS measurement was developed to reflect the total antioxidant status instead of individual measurements (8)(9)(10). Some studies investigated the effects of the oxidative system and antioxidant enzyme levels on various diseases including migraine, head and neck tumors, chronic tonsillitis, nasal polyps, adenoid hypertrophy, Behçet's disease, and chronic obstructive lung disease (16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21).…”

“…Antioxidant defense systems have been developed in aerobic organisms to control the formation of free radicals and to prevent the harmful effects of these molecules. However, in some cases, the available antioxidant defense system is missing for avoiding to the toxic effects of free radicals and a condition called oxidative stress occurs and a condition called oxidative stress occurs [8,[12][13][14][15].…”

“…Total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) are used to defined as the oxidant/antioxidant balance. TOS, TAS, and OSI are the parameters used as oxidative stress markers [12,13]. Another important group of physiological antioxidant defense system is the group of sulfhydryl (-SH).…”
