Parameter Estimates for a PEMFC Cathode

Abstract: Five parameters of a model of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell cathode (the porosity of the gas diffusion layer, the porosity of the catalyst layer, the exchange current density of the oxygen reduction reaction, the effective ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, and the ratio of the effective diffusion coefficient of oxygen in a flooded spherical agglomerate particle to the squared particle radius) were determined by the least square fitting of experimental polarization curves.

“…The so-called sensitivity approach can be used to achieve a desired accuracy. 21 The sensitivity approach is associated with the solution of sensitivities from sensitivity equations. A sensitivity equation is generated from a model equation by taking the partial derivative on both sides of the model equation with respect to a fitting parameter.…”

“…A nonlinear least squares regression technique such as the Marquardt method is useful for that purpose. [20][21][22] Given that the number of fitting parameters is specified, a unique set of parameter estimates can be obtained by using nonlinear regression.…”
