This chapter gives an overview of recent research conducted among academics working at Swedish universities and offers insights into their research and publication practices. Sweden provides an interesting case due to its high general proficiency in English as an additional language (ranked first in Europe and in the world, according to the most recent English Proficiency Index). At the same time, recent developments in language policy indicate a strong emphasis on the importance of the national language(s) in high-stakes domains such as research and education. The research reviewed in this chapter includes major findings of two surveys carried out at major Swedish universities and two case studies of humanities scholars working across three disciplines. It is demonstrated that English has been firmly established as an academic language at Swedish universities and is present in practically all disciplines, although to different extents. Englishmedium research and publication practices are the least common in the humanities, but ultimately language choice is pragmatically determined by external factors such as the target audience. Overall, the informants of the studies reviewed here show critical awareness of English use in academic communication and, in most cases, do not perceive themselves to be disadvantaged by their non-native status. Particularly those informants whose research involves international cooperation or an international audience consider themselves to be full members of their respective academic communities and view English as an academic lingua franca or, as one informant put it, "nobody's land". At the same time, Swedish is used for outreach and for academic publications dealing with topics of local interest and significance. During the following decade, further concerns were raised about any eventual disadvantages for non-native speakers who publish their research in English in international peer-reviewed journals (e.g.special issue of AILA Review was dedicated to linguistic inequality in scientific communication. Resumen. En el ámbito de la comunicación científica, distintos idiomas -como el alemán, el francés o el inglés-han alcanzado a lo largo de la historia el estatus de lenguas vehiculares. Sin embargo, la ciencia contemporánea ha asistido a un notable incremento del uso del inglés para fines académicos, de modo que, hoy en día, los registros científicos escritos en otras lenguas son cada vez más escasos. Como consecuencia, este hecho ha puesto de manifiesto algunas dificultades y desigualdades a las que se enfrentan los investigadores no anglófonos a la hora de desarrollar su actividad profesional en un contexto que perpetúa el inglés como lengua franca en la comunicación científica. Asimismo, ha dado origen a un cambio en las pautas de publicación de los investigadores asociado a las diferentes actitudes relacionadas con la elección de la lengua en la que comunican sus resultados. En este trabajo realizamos una revisión del estado de la cuestión y analizamos los datos disponibles procedentes de los principales trabajos que se han realizado sobre el caso español, así como en otros contextos no anglófonos. Finalmente, se extraen a modo de conclusión las principales implicaciones pedagógicas, económicas y políticas sobre esta cuestión.

Key points Publish in English or perish is becoming a reality in many non‐Anglophone countries. Non‐Anglophone journals are facing a dilemma: losing appeal to authors/reviewers if published in local languages or losing linguistic/cultural identity if published in English. This article analyses language policies those journals may use and positions them on a capital‐identity matrix to highlight their advantages and disadvantages. The article elaborates on two emerging language policies (bilingual publishing and extended English summary), both helping preserve their identity and take advantage of the capital of the English language. The article provides insights into the pros and cons of different language policies and how to select policies that best support journal survival and development.
