Abstract. In recent years, textile materials with special applications in the cosmetic field have been developed. A new sector of cosmetic textiles is opened up and several cosmetic textile products are currently available in the market. Microencapsulation technology is an effective technique to control the release properties of active ingredients that prolong the functionality of cosmetic textiles. This study discusses the development of cosmetic textiles and addresses microencapsulation technology with respect to its historical background, significant advantages, microencapsulation methods and recent applications in the textile industry. Gelatin microcapsules containing vitamin C were prepared using emulsion hardening technique. Both the optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the newly developed microcapsules were in the form of core-shell spheres with relatively smooth surface. The particle size of microcapsules ranged from 5.0 to 44.1 μm with the average particle size being 24.6 μm. The gelatin microcapsules were proved to be non-cytotoxic based on the research findings of the toxicity studies conducted on human liver and breast cell lines as well as primary bone marrow culture obtained from patient with non-malignant haematological disorder. The gelatin microcapsules were successfully grafted into textile materials for the development of cosmetic textiles.

BackgroundCandida susceptibility commonly occurs in breast cancer patients. Of which, Candida albicans is considered as a common pathogen causing candidiasis. Martinella iquitosensis (Bignoniaceae) is one of the species belonged to Martinella, distributed widely in Amazon basin. Its root extract yielded two complex substituted tetrahydroquinolines, Martinelline and Martinellic acid which were the first natural non-peptide bradykinin receptor antagonists identified.FindingsIn this study, a novel martinelline type analogue, named 2,3,3a,4,5,9b-hexahydro-8-phenoxy-4-(pyridin-2-yl)furo[3,2-c]quinoline, was synthesized and its preliminary anticancer activity and antifungal potential were investigated. This compound showed potential anticancer activity against MDAMB-231 breast cancer cells. Meanwhile it could enhance the fungistatic activity of miconazole against Candida albicans.ConclusionsThese findings provide an implication for the continue investigation and development of martinelline type analogues as therapeutic agents in the future.

A novel drug-eluting stent (DES) is required to target vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) without harming endothelial cells (ECs). Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is critical for the proliferation and migration of SMCs. Sunitinib [a PDGF receptor (PDGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor]-eluting stents may therefore inhibit neointimal formation. The aim of the present study was to examine the stent-based delivery of sunitinib in a rabbit carotid model; in addition, the effects of sunitinib were evaluated in vitro. Local administration of sunitinib markedly reduced neointimal formation without delaying re-endothelialization in the carotid artery model. In vitro, sunitinib inhibited SMC proliferation; however, no effects were observed on ECs. Sunitinib caused necrosis of SMCs. In addition, sunitinib attenuated PDGF-stimulated SMC migration in a scratch wound assay and inhibited α-SMA cytoskeleton polymerization. Furthermore, sunitinib inhibited PDGF-induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, this novel DES may be a potential strategy for the treatment of vascular disorders.
