Papovaviral sialoadenitis in athymic nude rats

Abstract: SummaryA wasting disease was found in 32 athymic nude rats. The rats had parotid sialoadenitis with intranuclear inclusion bodies in ductal and acinar epithelial cells. Other common lesions included bronchitis, bronchiolitis and secondary bacterial pneumonia. Less commonly, rhinitis and Harderian adenitis were seen. Intranuclear inclusions were also seen in bronchial epithelium of I rat, Harderian gland acini of 1 rat and laryngeal glands of 2 rats. Viral particles, averaging 45 nm in diameter, sometimes in cr… Show more

“…Athymic rat polyomavirus was detected in inclusion bodies of rat cells reacting with an SV40-specific antiserum [24]; so far, no genomic nucleotide sequences are available for this virus. Cynomolgus polyomavirus was described [22] in immunosuppressed cynomolgus monkeys showing nephritis, urethritis and enteritis; only a very short part of the genome (129 bp) has been sequenced so far.…”

“…Polyomaviruses are nonenveloped icosahedral viruses with small circular double-stranded DNA genomes (5 kb). A polyomavirus serologically distinct from Mus musculus polyomavirus was detected in rats in 1984 (Ward et al, 1984). It was found initially in athymic rats that developed a wasting disease with parotid sialoadenitis and in some cases tracheitis, bronchitis, or bronchiolitis (Ward et al, 1984).…”

Basophilic intranuclear inclusions consistent with papovavirus infection occurred in ductal epithelial and acinar cells of the parotid salivary glands (Ward et al, 1984).…”
