PaperSketch

Abstract: Pen and paper support the rapid production of sketches. However, the paper interface is not always optimal for collaborative sketching as seen in brainstorming sessions where multiple parties would often like to communicate and participate in the sketching synchronously. Novel interactive paper solutions may provide the answer by bridging the paperdigital divide and allowing users to sketch on paper simultaneously while capturing the actions digitally. We present an analysis of collaborative sketching activiti… Show more

“…Previous studies have also designed systems for sharing a digital workspace (Tang and Minneman, 1990;Gaver et al, 1991;Ishii and Kobayashi, 1992;Tuddenham and Robinson, 2009;Judge et al, 2011;Weibel et al, 2011). For instance, VideoDraw (Tang and Minneman, 1990) shares handwritten notes on a display screen to simulate a situation where users are writing and drawing on the same pad of paper.…”

“…Many systems present a remote partner's hand image (Tang and Minneman, 1990;Wellner, 1993;Takao et al, 2001;Paul et al, 2006;Izadi et al, 2007;Wilson et al, 2007;Weibel et al, 2011) or shadow (Tuddenham and Robinson, 2009) on a shared workspace. In such systems, the sense of information sharing may increase because the partner's hand image will improve the certainty that the partner is actually writing.…”

“…Oehlberga et al (2009) made a crosscomparison of tangible, digital and hybrid engineering design sketchbooks (or 'journals' in their terminology) across a four-year period, regarding their differential uptake, presentation and content. Weibel et al (2011) proposed solutions for remote collaborative sketching on "interactive paper", involving a shared digital workspace where each participant sketches with a digital pen.…”

“…Paper is easy to annotate, cheap, lightweight, foldable, mobile and requires no power source (Wijnen and van den Hoven, 2011). Not surprisingly, the vitality and personality of sketched freehand drawings is a theme that permeates throughout research literature on modelling and design, and is central to designers' developmental activities captured in their design sketchbooks (Weibel et al, 2011). It is therefore important to determine whether there are credible digital alternatives for pen-and-paper sketching, since these would undoubtedly form a foundation for a successful digital sketchbook.…”
