Introduction: Cervical cancer is the leading cause of death in developing countries like India. Cervical cytology by papanicolaou (pap) smears is an effective means of screening for cervical premalignant and malignant lesions. Aim: To study the role of pap smear in detecting premalignant and malignant lesions of cervix and to determine the prevalence of various lesions. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study of 1030 conventional pap smears reported from the Department of Pathology, Government Medical College, Anantapuramu. The time period was from October 2014-September 2016. Results: In our study out of 1030 cases, inflammatory smears were reported in 713 cases (69.22%) ,Epithelial cell abnormalities were found in 71 smears(6.89%), atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) in 27 (2.62%), AGUS in 0.10%, LSIL in 25 cases (2.43%), HSIL in 1.26% cases and invasive squamous cell carcinoma in 5 (0.48%) cases.

Background: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women. In India and other developing countries cervical cancer is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Cancer cervix continues to be most common genital carcinoma in India accounting for 80% of all female genital malignancies. Pre-invase lesions can spontaneously regress to normal or remain stable for long period or progress to a higher degree of dysplasia. Cancer of cervix is preventable if diagnosed at the pre-invasive stage with regular intervals of cytological screening by Papanicolaou (Pap) smears. The aim of the study is to analyse the pap reports in terms of normal findings, infections, premalignant lesions and invasive cancers.Methods: All women attending the outpatient department gynaecology at TMMC and RC Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh over a period of 1 year from august 2017-18 presented of obstetrics and with white discharge per vagina were screened for cervical cancer using pap smear. All the smears were reported as per the 2014 Bethesda system.Results: Out of 1392 Pap smear reports ASCUS was reported in 27 cases (2%), LSIL in 27 cases (2%), HSIL in 15 cases (1%), malignant cells in 15 cases (1%) and normal including the infection is reported in 1308 cases (94%).Conclusions: Early cervical epithelial changes can be identified by a Pap smear test, which is the primary screening test for detection of precancerous cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and the early stage of invasive cervical cancer.

INTRODUCTION PAP smear is an important tool which compliment histopathology in detection of various cervical lesions. Since last few decades, it is becoming easy and cost-effective way for early detection of pre-cancerous and cancerous cervical lesions. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to evaluate the utero-cervical lesions in peri-& post-menopausal age group by Pap smear method; to study the distribution of cervical lesions and to correlate cytology with histopathology wherever available. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted at pathology department of GMC, HALDWANI. It comprised of 324 cases of PAP smear of women with complaints pertaining to cervix over a period of two years.. PAP smear results were reported according to 'The Bethesda system' (TBS), followed by cervical biopsy and surgically resected specimens, wherever available. RESULTS: Total 324 cases were evaluated on pap smear cytology. The most of the cases comprised of peri and post menopausal age group (141women,43.52%) while only 16 women (4.96%) are over 65 years. Most common symptom was lower abdominal pain (100 cases; 30.87%). The cervical lesions were categorized as: 14 (4.32%) cases unsatisfactory, 231 (71.30%) cases benign /inflammatory, 60 (18.52%) cases normal, 15 (4.63%) cases of pre-malignant and 4 (1.23%) cases of malignant category. On histopathological examination, maximum 59 (68.61%) cases were inflammatory, 7 (8.14%) cases were pre-malignant and 20 (23.25%) cases were malignant. CONCLUSION: Our study concluded that the pap smear examination is a useful technique to find the cause of cervical lesions. It is easy to perform, minimally invasive, outdoor procedure that gives quick results and should be followed at all the centers.
