Pankun: A New Generation of Broadband Ocean Bottom Seismograph

Abstract: This paper presents a new broadband ocean bottom seismograph (OBS) developed by the SUSTech OBS lab for passive-source seafloor seismic observations. This instrument, called Pankun, has several key features that set it apart from traditional OBS instruments. In addition to the seismometer-separated scheme, these features include a unique shielding structure to minimize current-induced noise, a compact gimbal for accurate leveling, and low power consumption for extended operation on the seafloor. The design and… Show more

“…Various types of OBSs may respond differently to the impingements of bottom currents due to their different physical form factors. In this experiment, we use a typical passive-source OBS called Pankun, developed by the OBS Lab at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) (Liu et al, 2022(Liu et al, , 2023Wang et al, 2022). As shown in Figure 1, Pankun is a passive-source OBS adopting the standard layout, which separates the sensor from the mainframe once deployed.…”

“…The studies of the OBSIP project [4][5][6], like many others [7][8][9], are primarily focused on determining the deep structure of the crust and upper mantle, rather than studying the seismic regime, which requires a longer recording period. For this purpose, permanent cabled OBS networks located in seismically active zones are more suitable.…”
