Pancreatic enzyme secretion in the conscious rat

Abstract: 1. A method for collecting duodenal juice and gastric content separately, in conscious rats, is described. Metal cannulas were implanted into the stomach fundus. For the main experiment a double lumen tube was inserted through the cannula via the pylorus into the duodenum. 2. The following secretion patterns were observed: a) In the resting state there was a constant flow rate of duodenal volume, bicarbonate, trypsin and amylase. b) Cholinergic stimuli were capable of increasing enzyme secretion as much as fou… Show more

In the present work in order to keep the animals in more physiological conditions, pancreatic juice was reintroduced except during tests, as in the investigations of Pedrazzoli, Dodi, Varotto & Lise (1975), Cavarzan, Teixeira, Sarles, Palasciano & Tiscornia (1975) and Laugier & Sarles (1977).…”

“…This assessment has been verified (18) when the modifications in the enzymatic composition of pancreatic juice were the result of an adaptation of the gland to a dietary change. But an increasing number of authors reported a non-parallelism in the secretion of the pancreatic enzymes after stimulation (8,9,15,21,27,28). The aim of the present work was to study whether a short term non-parallelism in…”

“…Our data are in agreement with these previous workers. In the rat, basal secretion is more important than in other species (Sewell & Young, 1975;Desmul et al 1974;: basal bicarbonate concentration (50-1 + 1-7 m-equiv/l) is similar to that found by Cavarzan et al (1975) and Hotz, Zwicker, Minne & Ziegler (1975) (Pedrazzoli et al 1975;Shaw, Heath & Stark, 1973;Shaw & Heath, 1973a, b;Desmul et al 1974;). The relatively low basal protein output could be due to the strain of animal used (Debray et al 1962) to intestinal recirculation of pancreatic juice between tests (Green, Olds, Matthews & Lyman, 1975;Laporte & Tremolieres, 1971;Desmul et al 1974) or to bile duct ligation (Konturek & Thor, 1973).…”
