The Kas Formation in SE Turkey was deposited as part of the Permian sequence on the northern margin of the Arabian Plate. Its stratigraphic relationship to time‐equivalent strata of the Arabian Plate was mentioned briefly in previous studies, but has not been elaborated and illustrated in detail. This biostratigraphic review of existing palaeontological data has improved the accuracy of age interpretation for the Kas Formation, and the relationship of its excellent palynological record to the international Permian chronostratigraphic units. As a result, this study has identified a number of key palynological species from the Kas Formation, which occur as well as in the ‘Basal Khuff Clastics’ of Saudi Arabia and in the ‘Khuff transition section’ of Oman. All these units have approximately the same age: Wordian to early Capitanian, based on ‘age control’ provided by Foraminifera. This study also demonstrates that, by using key palynological taxa, correlation of strata would be possible across the entire Arabian Plate in this narrow time range. Hence, the ‘Oman and Saudi Arabia Palynological Zone 6’ (OSPZ6) is applicable throughout the Arabian Plate area, including the northern regions of SE Turkey and Iraq. The Lopingian is one of the fastest rising periods of seawater strontium isotopic ratios ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) in earth history, and its mechanisms and increasing rates of the 87 Sr/ 86 Sr evolution were still disputed widely. These disputations among researchers were caused mainly by timeframe selection (sections' thickness or data of radiometric ages), and different stratigraphic boundaries and un-upmost dated ages. This paper examined published 87 Sr/ 86 Sr data of the Lopingian, and projected them on timescales based on evolutionary and age constrained conodonts fossils. 87 Sr/ 86 Sr evolution vs fossil constraining timescales was re-established in this period. This research suggests: (1) 87 Sr/ 86 Sr excursion projects on fossil zones can truly support 87 Sr/ 86 Sr evolutionary pattern in the period; (2) 87 Sr/ 86 Sr evolution provides a new approach for stratigraphic research of marine carbonate sections in lieu of biostratigraphic data; (3) 87 Sr/ 86 Sr stratigraphy works on marine carbonate sections of different sedimentation rates even between different basins; (4) the 87 Sr/ 86 Sr data and its shift was dependent on samples materials and chemical treatment methods; (5) the increasing rate of marine water 87 Sr/ 86 Sr in the Late Permian is suggested as 5.4×10 5 /Ma or slightly lower; (6) sedimentation age and its 87 Sr/ 86 Sr of the Lopingian marine carbonate suggested as: D PRO =259(R S  0.70695)/5.4×10 5 ±1 Ma.Permian, Lopingian, strontium isotopic ratio, conodont zone, marine carbonate, stable isotope chemostratigraphy Citation:

The Gondwanaland assembly rifted dominantly during Late Carboniferous-Early Permian forming several intracratonic rift basins. These rifts were subsequently filled with a thick sequence of continental clastic sediments with minor marine intercalations in early phase. In western part of India, these sediments are recorded in enclaves of Bikaner-Nagaur and Jaisalmer basins in Rajasthan. Facies correlatives of these sediments are observed in a number of basins that were earlier thought to be associated with the western part of India. The present work is a GIS based approach to reconnect those basins to their position during rifting and reconstruct the tectono-sedimentary environment at that time range. The study indicates a rift system spanning from Arabian plate in the north and extending to southern part of Africa that passes through Indus basin, western part of India and Madagascar, and existed from Late Carboniferous to Early Jurassic. Extensions related to the opening of Neo-Tethys led to the formation of a number of cross trends in the rift systems that acted as barriers to marine transgressions from the north as well as disrupted the earlier continuous longitudinal drainage systems. The axis of this rift system is envisaged to pass through present day offshore Kutch and Saurashtra and implies a thick deposit of Late Carboniferous to Early Jurassic sediments in these areas. Based on analogy with other basins associated with this rift system, these sediments may be targeted for hydrocarbon exploration.
