“…This definition of palliative care stems from the work of Saunders (1967), who founded the first modern hospice facility in the United Kingdom more than 50 years ago (Cole, Carlin, & Carson, 2015;Saunders, 2001) and also influenced the model used in the United States. Palliative end-of-life care specifically addresses the needs of patients with debilitating and advanced illness toward the end of life and has become a subspecialty in many countries including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States (Al-Mahrezi & Al-Mandhari, 2016), and many others (Centeno et al, 2007). Cicely Saunders's comprehensive definition of palliative care at the end of life involves the management of total pain including physical, emotional, social, and spiritual suffering (Clark, 1999;Saunders, 2001).…”

“…Cicely Saunders's comprehensive definition of palliative care at the end of life involves the management of total pain including physical, emotional, social, and spiritual suffering (Clark, 1999;Saunders, 2001). Saunders's definition draws attention to all the needs of a patient with advanced life-limiting illness, promotes positive experiences, honors life in patients, and supports the needs of family members and caregivers (Al-Mahrezi & Al-Mandhari, 2016;Clark, 1999). This approach to patient care creates high expectations for the design of end-of-life care settings.…”

“…Following the World Health Assembly’s palliative care resolution in 2014, there has been a steady growth of palliative care services and research in Africa. This paper has used WHO’s definition of palliative care which states that, ‘palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual.’14 During the study, in August 2017, South Africa published the National Framework and Strategy for Palliative Care, stating that ‘Palliative care should be available to all patients as needed from birth until death and should be accessible at all levels of the healthcare service.’ This study contributes to the evidence examining palliative care service provision for AYA.…”
