The Basin and Range Province is a clas sic locality of continental extension, and it is ideal for analyzing factors that control the collapse of thickened orogenic crust. How ever, the magnitude and distribution of exten sion, which are critical parameters for this analysis, remain poorly constrained in many areas. To address this problem, a cross section spanning the province at ~39°N is presented. Retro deformation yields 230 ± 42 km of cumu lative extension (46% ± 8%), and an aver age preextensional thickness of 54 ± 6 km. When viewed at the scale of multiple ranges, two highmagnitude (~60%-66%) and two low magnitude (~11%) domains of extension are apparent, and each can be related spatially to portions of the Cordilleran orogen that have high and low predicted crustal thickness, re spectively. The eastern highmagnitude do main restores to a 60 ± 11 km thickness and corresponds to the western portion of the Sevier thrust belt and the estimated spatial extent of thick, underthrusted North Ameri can crust. The western highmagnitude do main restores to a 66 ± 5 km thickness and corresponds to the eastern part of the Sierran magmatic arc. Thickness variations inherited from Cordilleran orogenesis are interpreted as the primary control on extensional strain distribution. The eastern domain underwent a protracted, Late Cretaceous-Miocene tran sition to an extensional regime, while wide spread extension in the western domain did not start until the Miocene, which is attrib uted to uppercrustal rheological differences between the granitic arc and the sedimentary section in the retroarc. Most extension can be temporally related to geodynamic driving events, including delamination, slab rollback, and plateboundary reorganization, which caused gravitational collapse to proceed in distinct episodes.

The Paleozoic geologic history of Nevada can be viewed in terms of tectonic domains derived from the newly interpreted digital geologic map of Nevada. These domains reveal that Paleozoic tectonic events were shaped by complex interactions between the continental margin in Nevada and accreted terranes outboard of the margin. Ten domains are described. They include lower Paleozoic domains based on paleogeographic facies, the Carbonate Shelf, Slope and Basin domains; the Nolan Belt domain, a structurally complex domain that includes Precambrian and lower Paleozoic slope and basin facies rocks; the Dutch Flat domain, an Upper Devonian feldspathic sandstone of exotic origin; an Upper Devonian to Lower Pennsylvanian siliciclastic Foreland basin domain resting conformably over the Shelf domain; the Pennsylvanian and Permian siliciclastic and carbonate Antler Overlap domain, which sits unconformably over all of the older domains; the Golconda domain of deformed upper Paleozoic oceanic, carbonate and siliciclastic rocks, which is faulted over the Antler Overlap domain; the upper Paleozoic and Mesozoic volcaniclastic Black Rock-Jackson domain; and numerous carbonate, siliciclastic, and volcaniclastic Mesozoic terranes and assemblages that were either accreted to the margin or deposited unconformably over previously accreted Paleozoic terranes. Interpretations of these domains defi ne multiple, distinct, lower Paleozoic tectonic environments. They suggest that the "Antler Orogeny" can be reinterpreted as a sequence of tectonic events involving deformation of the margin and the accretion of multiple terranes to the margin over an extended period from the Late Devonian to the Early Pennsylvanian in a complex transpressive tectonic regime. Some of the accreted terranes contain rocks unlike those from the adjacent margin or other terranes and suggest they are far traveled. A change in the plate boundary confi guration in the Middle Pennsylvanian led to the development of a new margin that refl ected the effects of a new plate boundary farther to the west. Accretion to the margin of upper Paleozoic oceanic terranes at the close of the Paleozoic redefi ned the margin once again as it changed from a transpressive accretion regime to a true backarc plate tectonic setting in the Mesozoic. East-vergent and west-vergent, thickskinned thrusting and exhumation coupled with signifi cant translation of components of Mesozoic and older terranes rearranged the Paleozoic rocks of the shelf and earlier accreted terranes during Jurassic and Cretaceous time. Viewing the geologic history of the region in the context of terrane accretion provides new insight into the complex processes that shaped the continental margin of western North America.

Details of the stratigraphy, depositional setting, and clastic petrography of the upper Paleozoic Schoonover sequence in the Independence Mountains, northern Nevada, provide the basis for a better understanding of the paleogeography of the continental margin of western North America during the late Paleozoic.The Schoonover sequence represents the northernmost exposures of the Golconda allochthon, which was thrust over the outer edge of the continental margin of western North America during the Permo-Triassic Sonoma orogeny. The Schoonover sequence, like the Havallah sequence and other units of the Golconda allochthon, is an imbricated assemblage of thrust-bound packages of radiolarian "ribbon" chert, basaltic greenstone, silty limestone turbidites, and siliciclastic sandstones that range in age from Late Devonian to Early Permian.Detailed mapping, and facies and petrographic analysis of lithostratigraphic units, combined with paleontologic control, indicate that the Schoonover sequence consists of a coherent stratigraphic succession of basinal deposits with paleogeographic ties to the autochthonous shelf margin and to a volcanic arc. Latest Devonian-to earliest Mississippian-age basaltic and andesitic greenstones and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks form the stratigraphic base of the sequence and are succeeded by Lower Mississippian siliciclastic sandstones. The petrography of these sandstones indicates that they consist of mixed detritus derived from volcanic and continental shelf source terranes, indicating the proximity of an arc to the continental margin. In addition, stratigraphic relations between autochthon and allochthon indicate that the Schoonover basin evolved adjacent to the continental shelf throughout the late Paleozoic, its history punctuated by periods of basaltic volcanism and pulses of continent-derived clastic input. The onset of the Sonoma orogeny resulted in closure of the basin and emplacement of its deposits on the continental margin. •Present address: 2530 South Garfield Street, Denver, Colorado 80210.
