“…Although the definition of soil in recent times has favoured a more complex view based on comprehension of its vitality and the different sustainable management methods that can maintain its multiple functions (Janzen, Janzen and Gregorich 2021; Gosnell 2022), many ecologists and soil technicians still rationalize soils as an inert component, emphasising its physical and chemical composition and the processes by which it was formed (i.e., subject to the action of climate, vegetation, material of origin, time and relief) (Schoonover and Crim 2015). These different perspectives demonstrate differences in cultural values, and sometimes misunderstanding of indigenous ecological knowledge (Pazzarelli and Lema 2018). As pointed out by Rozzi (2012), if these worldviews are ignored, we run the risk of less equitable distribution of decision-making power in planning for local sustainability.…”
