Pain measurement: Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Verbal Rating Scale (VRS) in clinical trials with OTC analgesics in headache

Abstract: This study shows that the VRS categories cannot be presented in an equidistant manner on the VAS, and that contrary to previous assumptions, the pain intensity descriptors are less clear and can have different meanings in different languages. Therefore, both in the 3rd edition of the International Headache Classification (ICHD-III) and in the guidelines for clinical trials of patients with headache illnesses, rather than a 4-grade VRS, a 6-grade or higher level VRS or a VAS should be recommended, with correspo… Show more

“…Considering that the study sample was recruited from a school-based setting, and that headaches were the most commonly reported pain (88.5%), the overall presence of pain could be categorized as severe, with a mean pain intensity score of 5.4 (VAS) [52]. However, epidemiological studies have reported similar mean pain intensity scores ranging from 4.5 to 5.6 [2,8].…”

“…The intensity of the headache was estimated by the 6-stage (1-6) verbal rating scale, and verbal rating scale stage of 4 or over was defined as severe headache. 11 Duration of symptoms before MR imaging ranged from 2 days to 9 months. Three patients with SIH were only treated supportively (strict bed rest) for 2 weeks after admission.…”

“…Pain quantification was done using the visual analog scale (VAS). The VAS is a reliable and validated nonverbal rating scale used for assessing the pain and disability (26)(27)(28). This scale ranges from "0" being "no pain at all" to "10" being "the worst pain imaginable. "…”
