This study used models to assess how the type of prey caught by artisanal fishermen influenced the occurrence of Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) in the region of the estuarine lagunar comple.x of Cananéia (São Paulo, Brazil). 2. The data were collected from January 2012 to November 2014, during three fieldwork expeditions per season (spring, summer, autumn, winter). 3. Mullets (Mugil liza) were the fish with the highest association to dolphins, followed by Oligoplites spp. and Lobotes spp.; Mugil curema and shrimp, on the other hand, negatively influenced their distribution. The presence of fish-weir fisheries in the estuary also had a positive influence on the occurrence of dolphins, since this fishing gear is used as a barrier, minimizing the potential for their prey to escape.

Knowledge of recreational fisheries in Brazil is scarce and remains a critical issue to determine management actions. By adopting a collaborative approach that involved fishing guides, recreational fishing from the Iguape and Canan eia Lagoon Estuarine System (south-eastern Brazil) was assessed. During the study period (from April 2009 to March 2010), 341 fishing operations (boat day À1 ) were monitored. A total of 10 051 fish specimens of 26 families and at least 51 species were examined. The fat snook, Centropomus parallelus Poey, was the most commonly caught species representing 51% of the fish caught. Annual fishing effort was estimated at 272 859 anglerhours, and the mean catch-per-unit-effort was 3.42 fish boat À1 h À1 . Size structure of targeted species suggests that the populations are overexploited. The approach used in the study reinforces the importance of engaging different stakeholders in science and management and improving the communication among them. The use of multiple sampling gears is indispensible to obtain robust characterizations of fish assemblage structure in species-rich subtropical ecosystems. In this study, such a dependence was demonstrated by characterizing the structure of the high-tide fish assemblage in a subtropical tidal flat ecosystem (the Araçá Bay, southeastern Brazil) using eight different gears along five seasonal surveys and estimating the bay's fish species richness, combining these data with those from local tide pool fish surveys. The high-tide fish assemblage was spatially structured, contained five threatened species, and was dominated by persistent and large populations of Eucinostomus argenteus and of the fisheries species Mugil curema and Diapterus rhombeus that intensively use the bay throughout their life cycles. Large, small-bodied fish populations supported a regular use of the bay by piscivores. The autumn-winter peak in abundance of juvenile fishes caused a subsequent increase in piscivore abundance, and both events explained the bulk of the seasonal variability of the fish assemblage. The estimated richness revealed that the combination of sampling methods was enough for sampling the bulk of the local richness, and the bay may hold a surprisingly high richness compared to other costal ecosystem of the region. This faunal characterization, only viable using multiple gears, will be critical to support the implementation of a future study to monitor the impacts on local fish biodiversity of an imminent port expansion over the tidal flat.
