Recreational fisheries in Brazil have increased in importance and attracted many foreign recreational fishers. The objectives of this article were to summarise the available data on Brazilian recreational fisheries, to discuss some of their features and to analyse how they are performing in different regions compared with international trends. A review of published and unpublished sources together with data from recreational fishing licences was used. The participation rate was low (0.9%). Overall, there was a high diversity of fish species, with the following species/group of species repeatedly reported: Menticirrhus spp., Centropomus spp., Cynoscion spp., and Micropogonias furnieri (marine/estuarine water), and Cichla spp., Hoplias malabaricus, and Piaractus mesopotamicus, together with the introduced Oreochromis niloticus and Coptodon rendalli (fresh water). The north‐eastern region differs from the other regions: fishing occurs mostly in marine waters and fishers acquire mainly shore‐based licences, have minimum fishing expenditures and rarely release fishes. There is no estimate of the total harvest or economic value. Conflicts include catch‐and‐release‐oriented freshwater and marine recreational fishers vs consumption‐oriented coastal fishers, tournament participants vs non‐participants, commercial fishers and other leisure activities, pollution, ports, species introductions and translocations, protected areas, and federal and state laws. Cases of smooth shifts from artisanal to recreational fishing were detected, possibly associated with changes in the societal relationship with natural resources.
Commercial fisheries catches by country are documented since 1950 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Unfortunately, this does not hold for marine recreational catches, of which only few, if any, estimates are reported to FAO. We reconstructed preliminary estimates of likely marine recreational catches for 1950-2014, based on independent reconstructions for 125 countries. Our estimates of marine recreational catches that are retained and landed increased globally until the early 1980s, stabilized through the 1990s, and began increasing again thereafter, amounting to around 900,000 t · year −1 in 2014. Marine recreational catches thus account for slightly less than 1% of total global marine catches. Trends vary regionally, increasing in Asia, South America and Africa, while slightly decreasing in Europe and Oceania, and strongly decreasing in North America. The derived taxonomic composition indicates that recent catches were dominated by Sparidae (12% of total catches), followed by Scombridae (10%), Carangidae (6%), Gadidae (5%), and Sciaenidae (4%). The importance of Elasmobranchii (sharks and rays) in recreational fisheries in some regions is of concern, given the life-history traits of these taxa. Our preliminary catch reconstruction, despite high data uncertainty, should encourage efforts to improve national data reporting of recreational catches.
Knowledge of recreational fisheries in Brazil is scarce and remains a critical issue to determine management actions. By adopting a collaborative approach that involved fishing guides, recreational fishing from the Iguape and Canan eia Lagoon Estuarine System (south-eastern Brazil) was assessed. During the study period (from April 2009 to March 2010), 341 fishing operations (boat day À1 ) were monitored. A total of 10 051 fish specimens of 26 families and at least 51 species were examined. The fat snook, Centropomus parallelus Poey, was the most commonly caught species representing 51% of the fish caught. Annual fishing effort was estimated at 272 859 anglerhours, and the mean catch-per-unit-effort was 3.42 fish boat À1 h À1 . Size structure of targeted species suggests that the populations are overexploited. The approach used in the study reinforces the importance of engaging different stakeholders in science and management and improving the communication among them. Wave action in sandy beach surf zones and its influence on species composition were evaluated at three sites at Pontal do Paraná, Paraná State, between June/2004 and May/2005. At each sampling site, five hauls were performed monthly using a 15 m long, 2.6 m height beach seine with a 5 mm mesh-size. Samplings were carried out at low water spring tides during daylight. A total of 26,866 fishes were collected, amounting to a total weight of 84,838 kg, which were distributed amongst 28 families and 63 taxa. Multi- and univariated methods used indicated that sheltered and moderately exposed beach samples had similar ichthyofaunal composition, being clupeids and engraulids the most abundant at these beaches. Although abiotic factors differed significantly between beaches, depth appears to exert the major influence on ichthyofauna structure by providing less turbulent waters which might have permitted shoals maintenance. Conversely, exposed beach samples differed largely from the other beaches and were influenced primarily by wave height and salinity variables. These were displayed at CCA diagram and through the occurrence of P. virginicus, M. littoralis and T. goodei.
A ação das ondas em zonas de arrebentação de praias arenosas e sua influência na composição de espécies foram avaliadas em três praias em Pontal do Paraná, Paraná, entre junho/2004 e maio/2005. Cinco arrastos mensais foram realizados em cada local amostral durante maré de sizígia em período diurno, usando uma rede de arrasto de 15 m de comprimento, 2,6 m de altura e malha de 5 mm. Um total de 26.866 peixes foram coletados pesando aproximadamente 84 kg e distribuídos em 28 famílias e 63 taxa. Métodos multi- e univariados utilizados indicaram que as amostras das praias protegidas e moderadas foram semelhantes em composição da ictiofauna, sendo os clupeídeos e engraulídeos os mais abundantes nestas praias. Por mais que os fatores abióticos sejam diferentes entre as praias, a profundidade parece exercer maior influência na estruturação da ictiofauna provendo águas menos turbulentas, o que pode ter permitido a manutenção de cardumes. Em tendência oposta, as amostras da praia exposta diferem em grande parte das outras sendo influenciada principalmente pelas variáveis altura de onda e salinidade mostradas no diagrama CCA e pela ocorrência de P. virginicus, M. littoralis e T. goodei
