PADAPT 1.0 – the Pannonian Database of Plant Traits

Abstract: We present PADAPT 1.0, the Pannonian Database of Plant Traits which relies on regional data sources and integrates existing data and new measurements on a wide range of traits and attributes of the plant species of the Pannonian Biogeographical Region and makes it freely accessible at www.padapt.eu. The current version covers the species of the region occurring in Hungary (cc. 90% of the region's flora) and consists of 126,337 records on 2745 taxa. There are 53 plant attributes in PADAPT 1.0 organised in six m… Show more

“…7b Periodic shoot reduction to a remnant shoot system that lies relatively flat on the ground surface hemicryptophytes (H) The species list prepared for the PADAPT database (Sonkoly et al 2022) was used as a taxon list. Life form categorisations of Ujvárosi (1973) and Király (2009) were used as a starting point, but experts revised conversions.…”

“…Another reason is probably the lack of a classification of Hungarian flora in this respect; the potential user should classify the studied species. Compiling the Pannonian database of plant traits (Sonkoly et al 2022) was a good opportunity to overcome these shortcomings by adapting the categorisation to the Hungarian flora and classifying species into these simplified categories.…”

“…The number and cover of specialists, natural pioneers, and alien competitors were negligible, therefore we did not analyse them. Group values were collected from the PADAPT database (Sonkoly et al, 2022), the Flora database 1.2. (Horváth et al, 1995), and the identification guide of the Hungarian flora (Király, 2009).…”

“…For functional analyses we used the plant trait data stored in the regional database PADAPT (Sonkoly et al, 2022). We used trait data on average taxon height (plant height hereafter), duration of flowering, thousand-seed weight (TSW), simplified life-form groups, rosette formation, leaf area (LA), leaf dry weight (LDW), specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf dry matter content (LDMC).…”
