Abstract: Mussel culture was practiced in the raft system in Sinop area, Black Sea, from May 2005 to May 2006. One-year old rope grown mussel with a mean length of 40.28±0.51 mm and a mean live weight of 6.06±0.20 g were stocked in nylon socks, and suspended from the raft system. Effects of environmental factors including temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a, seston, particulate inorganic matter and particulate organic matter on some growth parameters were monitored during the experimental period. At the end of the expe… Show more

“…( 2010 ) . In Turkey, the total aquaculture production reached 139,873 t in 2007, while M. galloprovincialis culture was only 1,100 or 5,000 t, depending on the published data, Karayucel et al ( 2010 ) or Ozden et al ( 2010 ) . The culture of M. galloprovincialis in the south region of the Black Sea is a relatively recent development and not yet widespread, but prospects for mussel culture in the Black Sea are quite high due to the favorable salinity, temperature, topography, food availability and socio-economic conditions in the area, Karayucel et al ( 2010 ) .…”

“…In this study, meat yield and condition index of M. galloprovincialis were found respectively 13.01%-17.89% and 4.93-10.56. Meat yield and condition index of M. galloprovincialis were calculated as 13 -32% and 8 -17 in Canakkale-Dardanelles (on suspended ropes) (Yıldız et al, 2006), 16.23-23.93% in Sinop (in raft culture) (Karayücel et al, 2010), 23-31% and 7.33-25.20 in İzmir-Mersin Bay (collected from natural beds) (Kırtık, 2014), respectively. These parameters of M. galloprovincialis in this current study was found lower than the studies with mussels capture from natural beds and cultured.…”

“…The optimum times for harvesting of M. galloprovincialis depend on geographical location of farm. For mussels from North Adriatic there were suggested the end of autumn and winter (Peharda, ˇZupan, Bavˇcevi´c, Franki´c, & Klanjˇsˇcek, 2007), for mussels from south of the Black Sea there were suggested period between February and May (Celik et al, 2012), the minimum and maximum meat yield were in April and July, respectively (Karayücel, Çelik, Karayücel, & Erik, 2010). From our study, we recommend harvest time for mussels from north the Black Sea (Crimea) when the meat yield index reaches more than 20%, which occurs all year round except for December and March.…”
