P-cadherin expression and survival rate in oral squamous cell carcinoma:an immunohistochemical study

Abstract: Background: P-cadherin (P-cad) is a transmembrane molecule involved in the cell-cell adhesion and similar to E-cadherin (E-cad), but less investigated in oncology, especially in in vivo studies. Aims of the present study were to assess the prevalence of P-cad expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and to verify whether P-cad can be considered a marker of prognosis in patients with OSCC.

“…34 However, aberrant expression has been observed in several malignant tumors, including adenocarcinomas of the cervix, ovarian cancer, oral squamous cell carcinomas and carcinomas of the breast. 19,22,23 Interestingly, also intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas were shown to express P-cadherin (13/23 cases), whereas normal mucosa samples were consistently negative. 26 In our series, membranous expression of P-cadherin was found in only 9/127 (7%) evaluable normal mucosa samples but in more than 40% of adenomas and almost 60% of carcinomas, indicating a role in the carcinogenesis of ampullary tumors.…”

“…[19][20][21][22][23][24] Also intraand extrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas have been reported to express CD24. [25][26][27] P-cadherin was found to be constantly upregulated in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas using cDNA microarray technique that was confirmed using immunohistochemistry.…”

“…Physiologic P-cadherin expression is restricted to cytotrophoblastic cells in the placenta (placenta-cadherin), the basal layers of stratified epithelia in prostate and skin, and myoepithelial cells in the breast [16]. Up-regulation of P-cadherin has been shown in several cancers such as cervical adenocarcinoma [17], ovarian cancer [18], oral squamous cell carcinoma [19], and breast carcinoma [20,21].…”

“…[92] ), MMPs and adhesion molecules (cadherins, catenins and selectins) [93][94][95] . The function of several molecules mentioned above, such as E-, N-and P-cadherins [94,95] , E-selectin, integrins (such as ␀ 1 integrin) and MMPs depend on a low molecular weight GTPase family, called Ras-homologous (Rho) proteins [96,97] . These proteins play a pivotal role in the regulation of numerous cellular functions associated with inflammation, malignant transformation and metastasis.…”
