P‐144L: Late‐News Poster: Novel Transparent LCD with Tunable Transparency

Abstract: Transmittance of conventional LCDs, which are not suitable for application of transparent displays, is limited by its fixed color gamut. A new structure of transparent display was developed to freely control the color gamut for tuning the transmittance. Its sub-pixel was separated into two parts, colored & white, in order to control the transmittance of each part independently. The maximum transmittance could increase more than twice of original design. A vending machine with the transparent display has been d… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the light intensity passed through the LCD is dramatically reduced to about 5% by the thin-film transistor (TFT) array, color filter (CF) and polarizers. To improve the low transmission, a new transparent vertical-aligned (VA) LCD has been realized by our pervious study [1]. The combination of white and colored subpixels can provide a high and tunable transparency.…”

“…4(b) shows a clear background image seen through the new design of 65-inch T-LCD. As we mentioned before, the hybrid transparency is achievable by the selecting of RGBW sub-pixels [1]. For our vending machine application, the whole panel can be set the see-through area and high color gamut area to show the clear objects behind and advertisements on the panel at the same time.…”

“…Project technology, liquid crystal displays (LCD), electrowetting displays (EWD), projectors, organic light emitting diodes (OLED), and other technologies are typically adopted to create transparent displays [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. In project technology, information is projected onto a transflective screen, and the user can combine this display information with the real image behind the screen.…”
