Ozone-Herbicide Interactions on Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) and Velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti) Seedlings

Abstract: The potential interactive effects between the herbicides chlorsulfuron {2-chloro-N-[[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)amino]carbonyl] benzenesulfonamide}, PP009 {butyl 2-[4-[5-(trifluoromethyl-2-pyridinyl) oxy] phenoxy] propanoate}, and BAS 9052 OH {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)-butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)-propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexene-one} and the air pollutant ozone (O3) on the growth of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench. ‘Funk G623rg’] and velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrastiMedic. # ABUTH) were examined. All three … Show more

“…The exact mechanism of syner gistic and antagonistic interactions between herbicides and O3 on plants is unknown. Synergistic interactions between O3 and herbicides could result from either an 03-induced alteration of herbicide degradation in cer tain plants (4,5,6,9) or a herbicide-induced predispo sition of specific plants to greater injury by O3 (1, 14).…”

“…Exposure to 0 3 was initiated after plants were preequilibrated in the chamber for 2 h. Untreated seedlings were placed in another growth chamber with similar conditions for 6 h. 0 3 was generated by passing dry air through an ozone generator 3 . O3 concentrations in the growth chamber at plant height were monitored with a Monitor Labs Model 8410 O3 analyzer 4 . The monitor was calibrated every 2 weeks with a Dasibi Model 1003-pc O3 calibra tor 5 .…”
