Background Vogesella species are common aquatic, Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria, originally described in 1997. Vogesella perlucida was first isolated from spring water in 2008. Furthermore, bacterial pathogenicity of Vogesella perlucida has never been reported. Here, we report the first case of rare Vogesella perlucida-induced bacteremia in an advanced-age patient with many basic diseases and history of dexamethasone abuse. Case presentation A 71-year-old female was admitted with inflamed upper and lower limbs, rubefaction, pain and fever (about 40 °C). She had been injured in a fall at a vegetable market and then touched river snails with her injury hands. A few days later, soft tissue infection of the patient developed and worsened. Non-pigmented colonies were isolated from blood cultures of the patient. Initially, Vogesella perlucida was wrongly identified as Sphingomonas paucimobilis by Vitek-2 system with GN card. Besides, we failed to obtain an acceptable identification by the MALDI-TOF analysis. Finally, the isolated strain was identified as Vogesella perlucida by 16S rRNA gene sequences. In addition, the patient recovered well after a continuous treatment of levofloxacin for 12 days. Conclusion Traditional microbiological testing system may be inadequate in the diagnosis of rare pathogenic bacteria. Applications of molecular diagnostics techniques have great advantages in clinical microbiology laboratory. By using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, we report the the first case of rare Vogesella perlucida-induced bacteremia.

Biofouling poses a serious concern for the district cooling (Dc) industry. current industry practises for monitoring biofouling continue to rely on culture-based methods for microbial enumeration, which are ultimately flawed. Computational flow cytometric (cFCM) analyses, which offer enhanced reproducibility and streamlined analytics versus conventional flow cytometry were applied to samples taken from 3 sites in each of 3 plants over a 5-week sampling program. We asked whether the application of cfcM to monitoring planktonic community dynamics in Dc plants could be able to provide sufficient information to enhance microbiological-control strategies at site and inform about plant performance impacts. the use of cfcM enabled the evaluation of biocide dosing, deep cleaning treatment efficiencies and routes of microbial ingress into the studied systems. Additionally, inherent risks arising from the reintroduction of microbiological communities into recently cleaned Wct basins from contaminated cooling waters were identified. However, short-term dynamics did not relate with plant performance metrics. In summary, the insights offered by this approach can inform on plant status, enable evaluations of microbial loads during biofouling mitigation programs and, ultimately, enhance industry management of the biofouling process. Hot urban climates requires extensive cooling to provide habitable indoor environments and high demand in electricity and water use. Centralized production and distribution of cooling waters from district cooling plants (DCPs) is the preferred means of providing cooling waters for industrial, commercial and residential use as it is generally more economical than conventional on-site air-based cooling. The current annual energy demand for cooling accounts for 10% of global electricity use and is expected to triple by 2050, largely due to population expansions in developing hot-climate countries, including the Middle East 1. Accordingly, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has seen a rapid expansion in district cooling facilities to meet airconditioning requirements which are the largest such requirements in the world (in excess of 25,000,000 refrigeration tons (RT) 2). Indeed, the peak consumption in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is second only to Saudi Arabia in the GCC with the majority of electricity loads (~ 70%) being required for cooling 3. Furthermore, peak cooling demands are forecast to reach 100 M RT in the GCC region by 2030 4. Given the continued expansion of the global population, climate change and lack of alternatives for cooling in high-density urban areas, we can expect a continued reliance on DCPs for the foreseeable future. Background. The control of biological hazard risk in health care and dental clinic environments represents a critical point in relation to the Covid-19 infection outbreak and international public health emergency. The purpose of the present review was to evaluate the scientific literature on the no-touch disinfection procedures in dental clinics aiming to limit transmission via airborne particles or fomites using no-touch procedures for environmental decontamination of dental clinics. Methods. An electronic database literature search was performed to retrieve research papers about Covid-19 and no-touch disinfection topics including full-length articles, editorials, commentaries, and outbreak studies. A total of 86 papers were retrieved by the electronic research. Results. No clinical article about the decontamination of a dental clinic during the Covid-19 pandemic was detected. About the topic of hospital decontamination, we found different no-touch disinfection procedures used in hospital against highly resistant organisms, but no data were found in the search for such procedures with respect to SARS-CoV-2: (1) aerosolized hydrogen peroxide, (2) H2O2 vapor, (3) ultraviolet C light, (4) pulsed xenon, and (5) gaseous ozone. One paper was retrieved concerning SARS-CoV-2; 32 documents focused on SARS and MERS. The cleaning and disinfection protocol of health care and dental clinic environment surfaces are essential elements of infection prevention programs, especially during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Conclusion. The decontamination technique that best suits the needs of the dental clinic is peroxide and hypochlorous which can be sprayed via a device at high turbine speed with the ability of producing small aerosol particles, recommendable also for their low cost.
