A general kinetic model is proposed to describe the polypropylene thermal oxidation of thin polypropylene films in a wide range of temperatures (from 60 to 200 C) and oxygen partial pressures (from 0.02 to 5 MPa) using a single set of parameters.This model was calibrated with several series of experimental data including analyses of primary (hydroperoxides) and secondary oxidation products (carbonyl species), and subsequent changes in macromolecular properties (average molecular masses). It predicts the experimental data previously published in the literature in terms of induction times and maximal oxidation rates. The variability of the oxygen solubility coefficient allows to explain the scattering of induction times and oxidation rates among the whole iPP family, but also the dependence of this latter quantity with oxygen partial pressure. This variability is presumably due to iPP polymorphism in the temperature range where oxygen permeability is commonly measured. It is concluded that the kinetic model can be used to study the direct effect of iPP morphology on its thermal oxidation kinetics (chemistry of oxidation).

We have used various techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy as well as dielectric measurements with a 4 GHz Microwave resonator to investigate the structure of uniaxially drawn a-polyamide 6 films. The influence of uniaxial drawing on several parameters such as degree of crystallinity, orientation and size of crystallites, permittivity and anisotropy was studied as a function of the drawing ratio. The main axis (baxis) of the polyamide 6 nano-crystals is aligned in the direction of drawing, while the hydrogen bonds (a-axis) are oriented transverse to the drawing direction. Increasing the drawing ratio yields a higher crystallinity, a better orientation of the crystallites, and a stronger dielectric anisotropy of the films. The good agreement of the results demonstrates that all the three experimental techniques are well suited to characterize the microstructure of polyamide films.

Summary: The present paper deals with the effects of natural weathering on the properties of poly(propylene)/polyamide‐6 blends (70/30 wt %) without and with PP‐g‐MA used as the compatibilizer at various content ratios (2, 4 and 6 wt%). The resulted changes in the chemical structure, morphology and mechanical properties of the different blends were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and tensile tests. After one year of outdoor exposure, no important changes in the chemical structure are observed by FT‐IR spectroscopy for both virgin and compatibilized blends. SEM analysis revealed the effectiveness of PP‐g‐MA to improve the compatibility of PP/PA‐6 blends. However, the weathering effect on the morphology of both virgin and compatibilized blends resulted in the formation of voids and cracks on the fracture surfaces, while the ultimate tensile properties decreased considerably. The overall results indicated clearly that the presence of PP‐g‐MA compatibilizer in PP/PA‐6 blends had no influence on the photo‐oxidation process.
