Oxy‐fuel combustion for carbon capture and storage in internal combustion engines – A review

Abstract: As the impacts of global warming have become increasingly severe, oxy-fuel combustion has been widely considered a promising solution for carbon capture and storage (CCS) to reduce carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to achieve net-zero emissions. In the past few decades, researchers around the world have demonstrated improvements by the application of oxy-fuel combustion to internal combustion (IC) engines. This article presents a comprehensive review of the experimental and simulation studies about oxy-combustion for CCS… Show more

“…It can be observed that every 𝑁𝑁 𝑃𝑃 curve presents an approximate unimodal distribution with a peak located around 17 nm nucleation mode. Furthermore, by increasing 𝑃𝑃 𝐼𝐼 from 5.5 MPa to 18 MPa, the peak of 𝑁𝑁 𝑃𝑃 curve gradually reduces from 9.83×10 5 to 4.66×10 5 . Regarding the trend of 𝑀𝑀 𝑃𝑃 , it demonstrates that increasing 𝑃𝑃 𝐼𝐼 has a positive effect on 𝑀𝑀 𝑃𝑃 reduction, but the benefit is not very obvious.…”

“…It can be seen that the 𝑁𝑁 𝑃𝑃 size distribution is quite sensitive to 𝑡𝑡 𝐼𝐼 . With 𝑡𝑡 𝐼𝐼 from -340 ºCA to -320 ºCA, the peak of curve for nucleation mode decreases from 1.27×10 6 to 8.36×10 5 , whilst the peak of accumulation mode decreases from 1.48×10 6 to 6.45×10 5 . By delaying 𝑡𝑡 𝐼𝐼 to -300 ºCA, the curve changes from bimodal to unimodal.…”

“…As Net Zero Carbon Emissions strategy has been implemented in some countries and will be implemented gradually throughout the world, various zero carbon technologies are being developed, such as pure Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) and Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV) that have achieved certain mass production, although they have a high price and low driving range. For considering heavy-duty applications and with an alternative technology for a low-cost operation, hydrogen combustion technology and CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) technology for hydrocarbon combustion are being developed widely [1].…”

“…Nevertheless, these technologies are too expensive and their output torque is low to be widely applied to heavy-duty engines used in waterway transportation. [22][23].…”
